The New York Jets needed more weapons for quarterback Justin Fields<\/a> as they entered the draft, and it came in the form of LSU tight end Mason Taylor.<\/p>\n

Known more for his blocking than receiving talent, it was clear New York was going to work on that part of his game to develop into a security blanket for Fields. Having made good strides through OTAs, minicamp, and now the first week of training camp, Taylor feels to be in a good spot in his first NFL offseason.<\/p>\n

As for offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, he thinks Mason is right where he needs to be.<\/p>\n

“I see growth and development out of Mason,” Engstrand said<\/a>. “He’s on the path to becoming what we expected and hope that he can be, and he’s done a really nice job this camp, in the pass game and in the run game as well. So, daily improvement by him, and we’re excited to see where that continues to go. Again, he and the quarterbacks they’re developing a nice rapport, which is good.”<\/p>\n

With Taylor stacking good days in camp, which over the past couple has seen him reel in a touchdown, it feels like he’s starting to figure it out.<\/p>\n

Yes, we know it is only early, and the true test will be in games, but Taylor is becoming everything the Jets thought and hoped he would be when they drafted him.<\/p>\n

If, and that’s a big if, he can continue on this trajectory and carry it over into the regular season, the Jets and Fields might just have a rather nice weapon to deploy in the run and pass game.<\/p>\n
