DETROIT \u2013 Detroit Lions<\/a> head coach Dan Campbell<\/a> expressed optimism about the team\u2019s progress and addressed several key topics during Monday\u2019s press conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re excited about today. This will be great for us,\u201d said Campbell, setting a positive tone.<\/p>\n

When asked about the shoulder injury that second-year cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr.<\/a> suffered, Campbell acknowledged the challenges. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s had a bunch of injuries to start his career. You hate it for the kid. It\u2019s not his fault. All you can do is try to get better, rehab, come back stronger, and move on,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

When evaluating running backs who are losing their potency, Campbell emphasized observation over statistics. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou can see it with your eyes, on tape. Whether it\u2019s losing a little burst, pop, or cut, your eyes tell you a lot. Usually, the numbers back that up, but you don\u2019t look at the numbers first,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

Campbell also discussed the value of joint practices, especially for players who do not see preseason game time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is their chance to get that type of preseason work in a more controlled environment. We\u2019ll be able to tell a ton about the backs, the line, the D-line, linebackers \u2014 those guys really get stressed and benefit from this work,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

The Lions will look to give more players pivotal reps, especially after being outplayed in the NFL Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio, against the Los Angeles Chargers, who won 34-7.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on last season\u2019s lessons, Campbell said, \u201cWith every year, your club matures. You learn not to take opportunities for granted. There\u2019s more of a sense of urgency. We can\u2019t afford errors that cost us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Regarding quarterback Hendon Hooker<\/a>\u2018s mental readiness, the coach noted improvement but acknowledged ongoing challenges. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s better than in the spring at getting plays in, running the offense, seeing covers, and making checks. He just needs some small victories to build confidence,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

Hooker will get the start vs. the Atlanta Falcons on Friday, Aug. 8, inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n

On the starting offense\u2019s progress at day 10 of camp, Campbell said, \u201cIt\u2019s about where we\u2019ve been. We see growth and some frustrations \u2014 off-sides, wrong splits, fumbles. We have to clean that up. But I like where we\u2019re going. We get better every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wide receiver Tim Patrick<\/a> was described as a steady veteran working hard despite feeling sluggish. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe hasn\u2019t been targeted much, which makes it harder. But Tim is smart, reliable, and a hard worker. He\u2019ll be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Campbell also addressed the competitive spirit between the offensive and defensive staff. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s business as usual \u2014 a competitive environment where everyone wants to win. The emotions run high, but when you walk off the field, it\u2019s arm in arm and some friendly jabs,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

Finally, regarding the placement of rookie safety Dan Jackson<\/a> on the injured reserve list, Campbell provided a cautious update. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t look good. We\u2019re sending it out for more opinions, but it looks like he\u2019ll be down for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jackson was placed on IR a day after he left practice due to the injury following practice on Sunday, Aug. 3.<\/p>\n

The Lions drafted Jackson in the seventh round out of Georgia in the 2025 NFL draft.<\/p>\n

Reports indicate that the 230th draft pick<\/p>\n
