Ahead of him are two veterans: Russell Wilson, who holds the QB1 spot, and Jameis Winston, somewhat surprisingly to some listed as QB2.

The 1st unofficial #Giants 2025 preseason depth chart lists Jameis Winston as the 2nd QB behind Russell Wilson and Jaxson Dart 3rd, despite the order of snaps typically being the reverse in camp practices. Giants visit the #Bills on Saturday pic.twitter.com/r1zPSiz7nk

— Pat Leonard (@PLeonardNYDN) August 5, 2025

While some around the league raised eyebrows at Winston’s positioning, especially considering Dart has reportedly taken a significant share of second-team reps early in camp, the Giants appear to be playing the long game with their rookie.

Learning the League

There’s one thing we know for sure: Dart’s standing on the depth chart isn’t cause for concern. The Giants traded back into the first round this spring to secure the former Ole Miss star, fully expecting him to be the future of the franchise.

But that future doesn’t have to start in Week One.

With Wilson entrenched as the starter and Winston offering veteran insurance, New York is affording Dart what many rookie quarterbacks don’t get these days: time. Time to adapt to NFL speed. Time to master the playbook. And time to refine the already explosive skill set that lit up SEC defenses in Oxford.

Jaxson Dart escapes the pocket and completes a throw pic.twitter.com/MuwY4FRHdI

— Giants Videos (@SNYGiants) August 4, 2025

In fact, giving Dart noticeably increased reps in practice—despite his QB3 designation—signals the organization’s commitment to his long-term development. It’s not about where he starts on paper; it’s about preparing him to take the reins when the moment is right.

And don’t forget—Winston holding onto the QB2 spot could also be a strategic move. Keeping him healthy and visible as the backup may increase his trade value as teams finalize rosters over the next month.

Stay tuned

While Jaxson Dart may not be suiting up as a starter just yet, Giants fans—and Rebel fans alike—have every reason to be excited. The tools, the toughness, and the leadership that defined his Ole Miss career are all still there. Now, he’s adding polish at the pro level.

If training camp reps are any indication, it’s not if Dart will rise—just when.

Hotty Toddy!

Like this:

Like Loading…

Related

Evelyn Van Pelt

Evelyn has covered sports for over two decades, beginning her journalism career as a sports writer for a newspaper in Austin, Texas.
