Recently, when Tyler Bass wasn’t available, Ray Davis performed placekicking duties for the Buffalo Bills.<\/p>\n

Turns out, it wasn’t a fluke.<\/p>\n

On the Bills’ first unofficial depth chart of the preseason, the second-year running back is listed as the backup kicker to Bass.<\/p>\n

That’s pretty awesome.<\/p>\n

Davis was a kicker in high school.<\/p>\n

“I was always telling them, ‘Hey, if we ever need a guy,’\u201d Davis told reporters<\/a>. \u201cIt was fun to come out here and do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davis shared that in high school, he once made a 57-yard field goal.<\/p>\n

\u201dI was telling everybody, whoever wanted to listen,\u201d Davis said. \u201cI said \u2018I can kick, if y\u2018all need me, y\u2019all need me.\u2019 Let\u2019s hope that they never need me, but if they ever do, they know I\u2019ll be there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Backup kicker is an odd role in the NFL, because teams rarely carry two kickers.<\/p>\n

If a kicker were to get hurt in one game, the team would sign a full-time kicker for the next week.<\/p>\n

But it’s those mid-game moments that would get tricky.<\/p>\n

If Buffalo actually trusted Davis to make extra points or field goals, he could see action in a game if Bass went down with a chunk of the contest still to be played.<\/p>\n

It’s certainly not a situation the Bills want to find themselves in. They’d love for Bass to be healthy and automatic all season.<\/p>\n

But if something goes horribly wrong, Davis is on the case. And for fans of quirky sports possibilities, the 5-foot-8 running back kicking field goals definitely qualifies.<\/p>\n
