{"id":273400,"date":"2025-08-09T04:28:30","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T04:28:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/273400\/"},"modified":"2025-08-09T04:28:30","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T04:28:30","slug":"49ers-sign-tanner-mordecai-put-equanimeous-st-brown-on-ir-nbc-sports-bay-area-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/273400\/","title":{"rendered":"49ers sign Tanner Mordecai, put Equanimeous St. Brown on IR \u2013 NBC Sports Bay Area &#038; California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 49ers announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportsbayarea.com\/nfl\/san-francisco-49ers\/nfl-preseason-game-2025-broncos-analysis\/1866380\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a pair of roster moves<\/a> Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco re-signed quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/tanner-mordecai-1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tanner Mordecai<\/a> to a one-year contract and made room for him by placing six-year NFL veteran wide receiver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/St.BEq00.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Equanimeous St. Brown<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportsbayarea.com\/nfl\/san-francisco-49ers\/jordan-james-broken-finger-kyle-shanahan-training-camp\/1866532\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the season-ending injured reserve list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mordecai, 6-foot-2 and 218 pounds, rejoins the 49ers after being waived Monday. He originally signed with the organization as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin on May 6, 2024, and spent the 2024 NFL season on the practice squad.<\/p>\n<p>St. Brown, 6-foot-5 and 214 pounds, signed with San Francisco on Tuesday following the team\u2019s decision to cut fellow veteran wideout <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/I\/IsabAn00.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Isabella<\/a>. St. Brown initially worked out for the 49ers on July 21, and after appearing in two games for the New Orleans Saints in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The re-addition of Mordecai simply is for depth behind recently extended star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PurdBr00.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brock Purdy<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mordecai completed 850 passes for 9,857 yards and 85 touchdowns over six collegiate seasons &#8212; with Oklahoma (2018-20), SMU (2021-22) and Wisconsin (2023) &#8212; and keeps the 49ers\u2019 backup quarterback situation familiar.<\/p>\n<p>St. Brown\u2019s situation appears extra unfortunate for him and San Francisco, considering his presumed role\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportsbayarea.com\/nfl\/san-francisco-49ers\/russell-gage-kyle-shanahan-training-camp\/1866563\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as a depth piece<\/a>\u00a0to a wide receiver room with many questions, especially as the 49ers remain without one of Purdy\u2019s top targets in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AiyuBr00.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brandon Aiyuk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The older brother of big-time Detroit Lions wideout <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/StxxAm00.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amon-Ra St. Brown<\/a>, Equanimeous has carved out a solid career for himself, having collected 63 receptions for 928 yards and two touchdowns in 62 career NFL games after three years at Notre Dame.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/49ers-talk-with-matt-maiocco.simplecast.com\/episodes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Download and follow the 49ers Talk Podcast<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The 49ers announced a pair of roster moves Friday afternoon.
