The Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a> signed Aaron Rodgers<\/a> ahead of the 2025 NFL season to a one-year deal to be their starting quarterback.<\/p>\n

Steelers fans are going to have to wait a while longer before they see the 41-year-old on the field in game action for their team.<\/p>\n

Rodgers isn’t expected to play in the Steelers’ preseason debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a>. Instead, Pittsburgh will give three of their backup quarterbacks playing time in their first game action of the summer.<\/p>\n

Is Aaron Rodgers playing preseason Week 1?<\/p>\n

Rodgers will not be on the field for the Steelers’ preseason Week 1 game against the Jaguars. Coach Mike Tomlin announced the 41-year-old would be among the starters to sit out the preseason opener.<\/p>\n

Rodgers expressed a willingness to play in preseason Week 1, noting he and Tomlin would have a conversation about the possibility.<\/p>\n

“It’s an interesting conversation,” Rodgers said Wednesday, per NFL.com<\/a>. “I think Mike and I have that at some point. I don’t think it’s in the plan for me to play this week, but whatever Mike wants to do, I’m fully on board.”<\/p>\n

Tomlin’s decision to sit Rodgers comes just days after sixth-round rookie Will Howard<\/a> was ruled out for the preseason because of a hand injury.<\/p>\n

The Steelers signed veteran quarterback Logan Woodside<\/a> to provide depth behind Mason Rudolph<\/a> and Skylar Thompson<\/a>. Otherwise, those two would have been the only available quarterbacks for Saturday’s game.<\/p>\n
