Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo sat out the team’s first preseason game against the Bills due to a hamstring injury.The Giants are hopeful Skattebo will return for the remaining preseason games against the Jets or Patriots.<\/p>\n

Former Arizona State<\/a> Sun Devil football star Cam Skattebo will have to wait at least another week before making his NFL debut.<\/p>\n

The fourth-round rookie running back has been dealing with a hamstring injury, and the New York Giants<\/a> decided to hold him out of their first preseason game Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Buffalo Bills<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Skattebo did not see a snap in the Giants’ 34-25 victory over the Bills.<\/p>\n

Skattebo had been running with the Giants\u2019 second-team offense and had received a handful of snaps with the starters before the leg issue cropped up several days ago. He returned to practice Aug. 1 but left early and has been working and running on the side since.<\/p>\n

Is Cam Skattebo playing today?<\/p>\n

The setback isn\u2019t expected to reduce his role as a first-year player. The Giants are counting on Skattebo to be a complementary running back, along with veteran Devin Singletary, to starter Tyrone Tracy Jr. and serve as a pass-catching, third-down threat out of the backfield.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Skattebo) was doing a good job when he was out there early on,\u201d Giants general manager Joe Schoen told reporters earlier this week. \u201cHe’s the type of guy you have to protect from himself.<\/p>\n

“All these guys, we’re trying to figure them out, and they’re trying to get out here and play and sometimes push themselves back a little bit soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

When will Cam Skattebo play?<\/p>\n

The Giants host the New York Jets<\/a> next Saturday, Aug. 16, before wrapping up preseason play Thursday, Aug 21, against the visiting New England Patriots.<\/p>\n

If his hamstring improves, Skattebo could make it back in time for one or both of those games. Schoen said the Giants won\u2019t rush him back until the rookie is ready.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe’s been everything we thought he’d be,\u201d Schoen said. \u201cHe’s instinctive, tough, got quickness. So once we get him back to health, I’m excited to see him get out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Skattebo set the Arizona State single-season record last year with 1,711 yards. He also scored 21 touchdowns, became the first player in school history to amass 2,000 or more yards from scrimmage in a single season and finished fifth in balloting for the Heisman Trophy.<\/p>\n
