{"id":279,"date":"2025-04-26T00:42:11","date_gmt":"2025-04-26T00:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/279\/"},"modified":"2025-04-26T00:42:11","modified_gmt":"2025-04-26T00:42:11","slug":"jets-were-dead-set-on-jahmyr-gibbs-in-2023-draft-joe-douglas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/279\/","title":{"rendered":"Jets were &#8216;dead-set&#8217; on Jahmyr Gibbs in 2023 draft: Joe Douglas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Jets\u2019 love for Breece Hall might not be as deep as previously believed.<\/p>\n<p>While being interviewed at a 2025 NFL Draft live watching party with Fox Sports Radio, former Jets general manager Joe Douglas revealed that they were \u201cdead set\u201d on drafting Jahmyr Gibbs.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo years ago, we had just made the trade for Aaron Rodgers,\u201d Douglas said. \u201cIn that trade, we flopped picks with Green Bay. We went from 13 to 15, and so we were absolutely dead-set, and I was prepared to take the heat at the time, but we were dead set on Jahmyr Gibbs. We were taking Jahmyr Gibbs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jahmyr Gibbs was a shock pick by the Lions in 2023.  Getty Images<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Joe Douglas confirms that in the 2023 Draft the Jets were 100% set on taking Jahmyr Gibbs, and didn\u2019t expect him to go in the Top 15<\/p>\n<p>This has been a rumor for awhile, but now confirmed by the GM who is also marketing himself for a 2nd job <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OhegpU9vid\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/OhegpU9vid<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NYJ Matt (@NYJ_Matt) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYJ_Matt\/status\/1915732365680239027?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 25, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Douglas adds that he didn\u2019t think anyone was going to take Gibbs until the 20s, but that was until the Lions chose to trade down to No. 12 from No. 6 in the draft.<\/p>\n<p>That trade ended up being Cardinals offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. at No. 6 while the Lions made out like bandits, drafting Gibbs at No. 12 and tight end Matt LaPorta at No. 34.<\/p>\n<p>Gibbs ran for 1,412 yards and 16 touchdowns for the Lions\u2019 powerhouse offense last season. <\/p>\n<p>Oddly enough, the Jets had already had a star running back on the team when they were targeting Gibbs, as they invested a second-round draft pick into Hall the year before. <\/p>\n<p>Gang Green drafted running back Israel Abanikanda in the fifth round, but he is no longer on the roster as he was waived in December and claimed by the 49ers.<\/p>\n<p>Breece Hall is on a contract year.  Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Hall has been embroiled in trade rumors as he enters the last year of his rookie deal.<\/p>\n<p>The Jets were all-in in 2023 when they traded for Rodgers as they hoped to contend for a Super Bowl.<\/p>\n<p>That season, of course, ended in misery as Rodgers tore his Achilles in the Jets\u2019 opening drive in 2023. X, @NYJ_Matt<\/p>\n<p>Douglas had a similar mindset in 2024 when the Jets added receiver Davante Adams as they attempted to save their tanking season. <\/p>\n<p>The Jets ended 2024 with a 5-12 record, and Douglas <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/19\/sports\/jets-fire-joe-douglas-six-weeks-after-dumping-robert-saleh\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was fired<\/a> by owner Woody Johnson just six weeks after the Jets\u2019 GM <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/08\/sports\/jets-fire-robert-saleh-in-stunner-after-just-five-games\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fired coach Robert Saleh<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Jets\u2019 love for Breece Hall might not be as deep as previously believed.
