Micah Parsons wants a new contract<\/a> with the Dallas Cowboys. <\/p>\n

A first-round draft pick in 2021, the premier edge rusher has become a household name as one of the most feared defenders in the NFL.<\/p>\n

Parsons, a four-time Pro Bowler who has twice been named to the All-Pro team, has 52.5 sacks in four seasons.<\/p>\n

Last offseason, Dak Prescott<\/a> and CeeDee Lamb<\/a> had to wait for their massive extensions. Will Parsons have to sit through the same process into training camp?<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what we know about his contract negotiations with Dallas:<\/p>\n

What is Parsons\u2019 current contract situation?<\/p>\n

The Cowboys picked up the fifth-year option<\/a> on Parsons\u2019 rookie contract last offseason, meaning he is under contract in Dallas for 2025. <\/p>\n

He is set to be paid just over $24 million<\/a> next season.<\/p>\n

The team could also place the franchise tag on Parsons twice after the 2025 season.<\/p>\n

The last time the Cowboys used the franchise tag was 2023, when running back Tony Pollard was tagged for $10.1 million.<\/a> He didn\u2019t sign a contract extension and left after the 2023 season.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the status of negotiations on an extension?<\/p>\n

Parsons\u2019 agent David Mulugheta<\/a> and members of the Cowboys\u2019 front office held preliminary discussions about a contract at the NFL scouting combine in late February<\/a>. A person with knowledge of the discussions told The Dallas Morning News last month that team owner Jerry Jones<\/a> and Parsons have met and had extensive talks about his contract.<\/p>\n

Jones and Mulugheta, the man who represents Parsons, have not met. Even though Mulugheta is regarded as one of the league\u2019s more respected power brokers, Jones ruffled some feathers at the NFL\u2019s annual meetings when he made a point \u2014 more than once<\/a> \u2014 of saying he doesn\u2019t even know the name of Parsons\u2019 agent.<\/p>\n

Jones suggested the framework for a deal is in place but added no deal is complete or imminent, stressing there\u2019s no sense of urgency since Parsons is in the final year of his rookie contract.<\/p>\n

How important will it be to get the contract done before training camp?<\/p>\n

\u201cExtremely important,\u201d Parsons said April 23<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou really see a lot of players struggle when guys aren\u2019t participating in camp, and they get off to slow starts. I don\u2019t want to get off to no slow start. I want to hit the ground running.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parsons is expected to ask for a $200 million contract extension<\/a> that would become a record for a non-quarterback.<\/p>\n

Cincinnati wide receiver Ja\u2019Marr Chase has the highest average salary for a non-quarterback at $40.25 million<\/a>. Parsons seeks more.<\/p>\n

The 49ers\u2019 Nick Bosa has the largest contract for a defensive player worth $170 million.<\/p>\n

The Browns\u2019 Myles Garrett, who requested a trade this offseason<\/a>, has the highest total guaranteed money among defensive players at $123.6 million after getting a new extension.<\/p>\n

From a cost perspective, it would seem logical the Cowboys would want to get Parsons\u2019 deal done soon \u2014 Maxx Crosby of the Raiders, a Colleyville Heritage product, also got a massive deal recently<\/a>. <\/p>\n

With Jones in the lead during these discussions, that isn\u2019t necessarily the case.<\/p>\n

Would Parsons hold out?<\/p>\n

The threat of a holdout is real when it comes to Parsons. Several Cowboys players, including Lamb and recently retired guard Zack Martin, resorted to those measures to get contract extensions or raises.<\/p>\n

Yet, team officials believed Parsons\u2019 comments late in the 2024 season, when he indicated he would report to voluntary workouts on time, which he did on April 14<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the last two years, Parsons had been an infrequent visitor to voluntary offseason workouts. <\/p>\n
