They included the reference &#8216;sports gambling&#8217;, with one even referencing &#8216;(UCLA vs USC).&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Mateer was a freshman at <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/washington-state\/index.html\" id=\"mol-58c8f400-77c6-11f0-8e39-130860a6437f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Washington State<\/a> in 2022 and NCAA rules ban student-athletes from &#8216;engaging in sports betting at any level (professional, college or amateur) for any sports that have NCAA championships.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The screenshot quickly spread across social media on Monday but the quarterback has now\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"class\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/John_Mateer4\/status\/1955330796211802235\">denied any wrongdoing<\/a>, insisting the payment references were in fact &#8216;inside jokes&#8217; between him and his friends.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;The allegations that I once participated in sports gambling are false. My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question, but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends,&#8217; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;I have never bet on sports.
