Tempers flared during Wednesday\u2019s joint practice between the Atlanta Falcons<\/a> and Tennessee Titans<\/a>, with quarterback Michael Penix Jr. finding himself at the center of a physical scuffle<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The incident began after Penix completed a long pass to wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud III. As the play ended, Penix and Titans defenders exchanged words, and the trash talk quickly escalated<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Players from both teams ran in from the sidelines, and Penix ended up in the middle of a pile, appearing to be thrown to the ground before several Falcons players, including McCloud and fellow receiver Drake London, came to his aid.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know where I was at in it,\u201d Penix said. \u201cIt was a lot of people. I knew I was down there somewhere. I wasn\u2019t the only one, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

Penix appreciated his teammates stepping in, stating, \u201cI\u2019m glad they did, because obviously that\u2019s not something that we want to be doing in practice. We want to get all reps in, get that good work in. But it went how it went. But to see the team have my back and they were there, make sure they protect me. A lot of guys asked me if I was good, and it was good to know that those guys had my back.\u201d<\/p>\n

There were no reported injuries, and Penix returned for the next offensive series. But the tension continued. One play later, Falcons offensive linemen Kaleb McGary and Chris Lindstrom got into it with Titans defenders. On the adjacent field, another scrum broke out between Tennessee\u2019s offense and Atlanta\u2019s defense.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey had a lot of words throughout practice, so I gave them my words, and it just went a little bit too far,\u201d a smiling Penix said.<\/p>\n

He later joked about his reaction, saying, \u201cI kind of blacked out. It was somebody else out there. I don\u2019t really do too much talking until somebody say something to me, and maybe I\u2019ll want to, \u2018OK, I threw a touchdown, now what y\u2019all talking about,\u2019 and then I guess not everybody takes that the right way. I think that\u2019s all it was. They probably looked at me as just the quarterback, [that] I wasn\u2019t that type of person. But I\u2019m from Tampa. I\u2019m from Dade City. \u2026 There\u2019s a respect part about it. We\u2019re all playing, we\u2019re all competing at a high level, but when disrespect comes in, it\u2019s like, \u2018All right, this ain\u2019t football no more.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Falcons quarterback coach DJ Williams admitted his initial reaction was \u201cabsolutely\u201d panic.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, you don\u2019t want that, but I take some positive out of it,\u201d Williams said. \u201cLike you saw the guys take up for him, and I think that speaks to his leadership and who he is in that locker room. Obviously, as coaches, we\u2019re upstairs, they\u2019re downstairs. We don\u2019t really see a lot, but obviously he has a relationship and the trust of the guys because everybody ran to his defense. So, I think that\u2019s a good thing for the Falcons.\u201d<\/p>\n

Head coach Raheem Morris has already confirmed that Penix will not play in Friday\u2019s preseason game against Tennessee<\/a>. Kirk Cousins is also expected to sit, with Easton Stick and Emory Jones handling quarterback duties.<\/p>\n
