In a regular-season game, the 49ers would put together a scheme to go against defensive lineman. McKivitz referenced how the 49ers always game-plan against Los Angeles Rams star Aaron Donald.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But in a practice, it\u2019s usually just one-on-one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cFor him, we\u2019ll probably scheme a guy like that,\u201d McKivitz said of Crosby. \u201cTo have all the one-on-one reps, it\u2019s just a confidence-builder to see where you\u2019re at in the preseason and if you need to go back and fix things. So, I\u2019ve been in joint practices with Trent, and it\u2019s a little different for him just going against people. That\u2019s when he joined his school\u2019s cross country team, a rare resume item for an NFL player, much less a 316-pound defensive tackle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Of course, back then, West didn\u2019t have the frame he has today, not even close.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cI was maybe a buck-40,\u201d he said. \u201cI was tiny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">And it wasn\u2019t as if he was setting records at his Chicago-area school. But the experience proved valuable when he started dedicating himself to football.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cDoing that early on, you kind of learn how to push yourself past your limits,\u201d West said. \u201cIt\u2019s not an easy sport to do. And I was never the best distance runner by any stretch. I just did it because: Why not? Who\u2019s gonna tell me I can\u2019t do it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The cross-country experience highlights another West characteristic \u2014 the outgoing defensive lineman\u2019s never been afraid to try something new\u2026..Early on in high school, however, that personality was held back by a stutter. As West explains it, his brain sometimes outraced his tongue, and the words wouldn\u2019t come out on time. So he took a speech class with a teacher, Kim White, who happened to be married to one of the school\u2019s football coaches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cI said, \u2018I want to get better at this,\u2019\u201d West recalled. \u201c\u2018I\u2019m not very good at speaking, I\u2019m not very good at talking. And I want to play football as well. So, eventually, I\u2019m gonna have to talk in front of a mic.\u2019\u201d\u2026.White taught him to slow his process, to allow the words to flow naturally. He grew so confident that White, who was also the drama teacher, convinced him to take part in a school musical, \u201cAnything Goes.\u201d West played the role of Moonface Martin, a loveable gangster who belts out a solo, \u201cBe Like the Bluebird.\u201d\u2026..West also played Kristoff in \u201cFrozen.\u201d As he got to know him, however, it made perfect sense.\u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportsbayarea.com\/nfl\/san-francisco-49ers\/nfl-preseason-2025-alfred-collins-raiders\/1868034\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Five 49ers to keep an eye on in Saturday\u2019s NFL preseason game vs. Raiders<\/a><br \/>\u201dSigle is seeing a lot more time with the 49ers\u2019 first-team defense. And Jason Pinnock\u2019s heel injury has provided Sigle more of a chance to run with the first team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The guy has the physical tools. Sigle ran the 40-yard dash in 4.37 seconds in the pre-draft process, including a combine-best 15.13 mph in the first 5 yards of his sprint. He also appears to have what it takes with his ability to comprehend the defense and communicate with his teammates on the field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">He was one of the 49ers\u2019 top players in the preseason opener against the Denver Broncos, and another good game could move him closer in his bid to earning a job as a Week 1 starter.\u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sports\/49ers\/article\/49ers-shanahan-wants-play-starters-saturday-20818338.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> 49ers\u2019 Shanahan wants to play starters Saturday. (paywall)<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">One reason Shanahan is considering playing starters in preseason Week 2, after fielding only two (Winters, Bartch) against the Broncos, has to do with his practice plan next week. He said he wants to simulate a regular-season game week. A starter who doesn\u2019t play Saturday will effectively be given one too many rest days, he reasoned, \u201cand it becomes unsafe to bring him back\u201d for practices at full go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Whatever the calculus, the Niners are already one of the most injured teams in the league \u2014 again \u2014 and having even a semi-healthy team for Week 1 would qualify as a win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cThe fact that so many guys are hurt, it kind of takes the decision process out for me,\u201d Shanahan said. \u201cI think there\u2019s three healthy starters on defense right now, so I got to decide on those three guys. But it does put a lot more pressure on the 3s and stuff. The 2s become the 1s. The 3s become the 2s.
