We thought we had this figured out. Dorian Thompson-Robinson was doomed once the Philadelphia Eagles<\/a> drafted Kyle McCord. A three-man depth chart at the quarterback position on a 53-man roster would almost certainly guarantee that Thompson-Robinson would be the odd-man-out.<\/p>\n

Thompson-Robinson arrived in the City of Brotherly Love by way of a trade. The Birds offered the Cleveland Browns<\/a> their backup quarterback from the most recent season as a bartering piece and received a fifth-round draft choice to sweeten the deal.<\/p>\n

Everyone knows how much Philadelphia hates cutting its draft choices. That was another angle that factored into the thinking. It’s Jalen Hurts’ team. Tanner McKee is the unquestioned backup quarterback.<\/p>\n

If the Eagles<\/a> invested draft capital in Kyle McCord, a 2024 Second-Team All-ACC\u00a0who threw for 4,779 yards and 34 touchdowns during his final NCAA football season.<\/p>\n

Thompson-Robinson took control of his destiny and outplayed McCord during training camp and the first preseason game. We began to wonder if he might upset the apple cart and seize the third quarterback job for himself<\/a>. Still, alas, after a stale second preseason game, one in which he started and alternated snaps with McCord, the third-year veteran may have hit the pause button on his elevation and revolution.<\/p>\n

Okay, so here’s the thing. Philadelphia’s flat offensive effort vs. the Cleveland Browns<\/a> isn’t all on Thompson-Robinson. Neither is it entirely the fault of Kyle McCord, but neither did much to take control of the battle for the third QB position on the Eagles’ depth chart. That’s worse news for Thompson-Robinson because one has to believe that, in a competition that seems even, Philadelphia may elect to keep the guy that they used a draft pick to acquire.<\/p>\n

McCord completed eight of 16 passes, resulting in 47 yards and a touchdown. Thompson-Robinson\u00a0completed five of eight passes. 17 yards through the air and an interception were the results of that effort.<\/p>\n

So, here we are. One Eagles preseason game remains, and it’s almost as if theories that Thompson-Robinson had taken a step forward were replaced by the idea that this competition is back where it started. All eyes will be on them during a week of practice and the final preseason game. Truth be told, a spot on the 53-man roster may be on the line.<\/p>\n
