For the Cincinnati Bengals and Trey Hendrickson, the clock is ticking.<\/p>\n

The fact that the Bengals are reportedly listening to trade offers for Hendrickson is proof enough of that.<\/p>\n

The regular season is three weeks away. There’s no time to waste.<\/p>\n

Hendrickson has been adamant that he won’t play for the $16 million contract he currently has for this season.<\/p>\n

The Bengals clearly haven’t been willing to compromise enough to get a more lucrative extension done.<\/p>\n

And so now, a crossroads. What does Cincinnati do?<\/p>\n

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio<\/a> writes that whatever the Bengals do, it may happen soon. Time is of the essence.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s entirely possible, if not likely, that one or more teams are willing to offer a contract that Hendrickson will accept,” Florio writes. “Indeed, common sense suggests that a team wouldn\u2019t give the Bengals value for Hendrickson without knowing that they can sign him to a new deal, especially since he has made it clear that he won\u2019t play under his current compensation package of $16 million. If all of this is true\u2014and if they\u2019re listening to offers that other teams are making\u2014the ball is in the Bengals\u2019 court. Whether quarterback Joe Burrow will be pleased with the prospect of Hendrickson leaving is a different issue. Either way, Week 1 happens in three weeks. If Hendrickson is going to be in uniform for anyone on September 4 or September 5 or September 7 or September 8, something needs to happen, soon.”<\/p>\n

Florio does make that key point, as well, that an acquiring team will then likely pay Hendrickson big bucks.<\/p>\n

That narrows down the field a bit as far as who can afford him both in trade cost and contract cost.<\/p>\n

But in reality, money is pretty malleable in the NFL. If a team wants Hendrickson, they can make the contract work however it has to.<\/p>\n

He’s certainly worth the price. Now the football world waits to see if the Bengals or someone else is the one paying it.<\/p>\n
