Matt Maiocco\u2019s 53-man roster projection after 49ers\u2019 preseason win vs. Raiders<\/a>
\u201cA good portion of the spots on the 49ers\u2019 regular-season roster remain unsettled. Injury concerns are certain to shape many of the decisions, as San Francisco heads to the final stretch of the preseason.<\/p>\n

The team has just three more practices and a final preseason game this week.\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the team\u2019s injuries in the preseason are just bad luck. Knee injuries to Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos last year and injuries to Corey Kiner (high ankle) and Dominick Puni (knee) this month aren\u2019t part of any systemic issue. They\u2019re just misfortune.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think there\u2019s any question, however, that the 49ers practice harder and faster than most NFL teams, including in training camp. Consider the player quotes in this story from 2023, one of them from receiver Chris Conley: \u201cIt\u2019s not about preservation here. It\u2019s about attacking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kyle Shanahan wants his players accustomed to the speed and intensity required in the regular season. He wants players to build what he calls \u201ca callus\u201d during training camp. Achieving that callus comes with a cost.<\/p>\n

That, at least, is my theory on why they have so many injuries each summer \u2014 they\u2019re being pushed harder than most teams.\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cGuyton appeared in 46 games with 14 starts for the Chargers from 2019 to 2023. He caught 71 passes for 1,112 yards and seven touchdowns. He spent part of last season on the Las Vegas Raiders\u2019 practice squad.<\/p>\n

Dowell appeared in 10 games with the Tennessee Titans in 2023. He caught one pass for 3 yards while seeing significant playing time on special teams.<\/p>\n

Jones is an undrafted rookie from North Carolina, where he caught 36 passes for 582 yards and six touchdowns last year as a senior. He was in camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars and was waived two weeks ago.\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201c\u201cI think it was just calming down a little bit,\u201d Martin said. \u201cI think I got a little too amped up. Tried to make everything a kill shot. Even today, I had a couple (misses). But I definitely made some improvements. I feel like I\u2019m getting my feet under me, getting settled in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martin\u2019s best traits \u2014 his speed (40-yard dash: 4.53 seconds) and physicality \u2014 were easier to see. His sack came on a well-timed blitz in which he flew through the middle of the line, dodged center Will Putnam and dumped unsuspecting QB Aidan O\u2019Connell before he could even consider fleeing. His other tackle for loss came when he sprinted from the middle of the field, quickly recognizing a screen, and dropped wide receiver Alex Bachman one yard behind the line of scrimmage along the right sideline.<\/p>\n

As Martin noted, he still careened out of control at times. Two snaps after dropping Bachman, he went for a big hit after running back Sincere McCormick caught a screen near the line of scrimmage and grasped only air when McCormick used a jab-step juke to sidestep him on a 9-yard gain. Martin was also beaten 25 yards downfield on a seam route by Qadir Ismail, but the tight end couldn\u2019t corral the pass.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just felt a little more comfortable. And that\u2019s the goal: just keep getting my feet in the ground and just making the plays that come to me,\u201d Martin said. \u201cI definitely would say I feel more comfortable and a little more clear-headed, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
