{"id":300726,"date":"2025-08-19T13:53:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T13:53:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/300726\/"},"modified":"2025-08-19T13:53:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T13:53:14","slug":"chiefs-roster-one-more-preseason-look-coming-for-key-offensive-linemen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/300726\/","title":{"rendered":"Chiefs Roster: One more preseason look coming for key offensive linemen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">When Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with the media before Monday afternoon\u2019s practice, he noted that as the team prepares for Friday\u2019s preseason finale against the Chicago Bears on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, it would be following a familiar routine on the practice field \u2014 and in the media room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cThis will be very similar to an in-season Wednesday practice,\u201d he told reporters. \u201cNow that we\u2019re back here, it gives you guys kind of a dry run to see how the meeting schedule goes before an in-season game \u2014 and also how practice goes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But in this exhibition season, not everything is being done the same way. In a break from precedent, many of the team\u2019s starters remained on the sidelines during <a href=\"https:\/\/arrowheadpride.com\/kansas-city-chiefs-news\/179077\/final-score-seahawks-defeat-chiefs-33-16-preseason-week-2-august-15\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last Friday\u2019s 33-16 loss<\/a> to the Seattle Seahawks. Reid confirmed that starters will see some action in Friday\u2019s preseason matchup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cThey\u2019ll start it off for sure,\u201d said Reid, \u201cand then we\u2019ll see how it goes from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">This will allow the team to get another look at the left side of Kansas City\u2019s offensive line, which has been the biggest question mark about the team during training camp and the first two preseason games. He hasn\u2019t missed a beat here as far as missing a day or any of that. So he\u2019s been available \u2014 and he\u2019s working with Coach Heck on getting better every day. So I like where we\u2019re at right now \u2014 but we\u2019ve got to keep going. He\u2019s a young guy, but he\u2019s been working his tail off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Playing next to Simmons at left guard, second-year player Kingsley Suamataia \u2014 who entered his rookie season starting at left tackle \u2014 has been highly scrutinized while adjusting to his new position. Reid sees a relationship developing between the two offensive linemen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cThose two,\u201d noted Reid, \u201cthey\u2019ve got a little something going there. You can see it more in the run game right now, where they\u2019re really working well together. Then in the pass game, both of them are kind of feeling that part out. [But] they\u2019re doing a good job with it. We\u2019ve been able to get some games in there against them. I thought they handled that well last week with some of the blitz stuff. Kingsley had a couple [of] trip-ups where the back stepped up and he tripped over somebody\u2019s foot there. Other than that, he did a pretty good job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Reid also lauded Suamataia\u2019s handling of the shift to his new role \u2014 and working with the rookie to his left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cHe\u2019s quiet,\u201d Reid declared of the former second-round draft pick, \u201cbut he\u2019s a sharp guy. He\u2019s welcomed this left tackle and they\u2019re trying to work that thing together. At the same time, him doing his job \u2014 moving from tackle to guard \u2014 I like the way he handles himself in meetings. He\u2019s grown in that area. [He\u2019s shown] attention to detail and all those things. I think it was good for him last year to get in there and play a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">In 2022, the Chiefs rebuilt their secondary around first-round cornerback Trent McDuffie and a handful of other rookie defensive backs. While that process didn\u2019t begin smoothly, the group eventually stepped up to play a significant role in the team\u2019s Super Bowl LVII victory \u2014 and remained one of the team\u2019s strengths when Kansas City won Super Bowl LVIII the following season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Reid is hoping for similar results from his young offensive linemen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cYou\u2019re in this thing long enough,\u201d Reid reflected, \u201cyou\u2019re going to have changeover. You know that young guys have got to step up and they\u2019ve got to play. So [Simmons is a] talented kid [who] wants to be good and is working at it. Both of them are that way. Both of them are high draft picks. So you\u2019ve got to get in, you\u2019ve got to go and you\u2019re going to live with a few things \u2014 but you expect to see constant growth as you go. It\u2019s similar to what we [did] with the secondary a few years ago.
