The players in this cohort haven&#8217;t occupied the national stage, and some aren&#8217;t even in the community theater phase of their stardom. But they have generated excitement within their programs, and according to their coaches and teammates, will be showcasing their talents in big ways this fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">They are commonly known as sleepers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Some might ring a bell, either from their recruiting profiles, transfer announcements or production in previous seasons. But none appears in <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/45798030\/2025-season-college-football-ranking-top-100-players-jeremiah-smith-cade-klubnik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ESPN&#8217;s list of top 100 players<\/a> for the 2025 season. <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/insider\/story\/_\/id\/40837116\/college-football-2024-preseason-player-rank-sleeper-picks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Last year&#8217;s sleepers<\/a> list included standouts such as Marshall defensive end <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/4683188\/mike-green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mike Green<\/a>, a second-team All-America selection and a second-round NFL draft pick, and Cal linebacker <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/4698244\/teddye-buchanan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Teddye Buchanan<\/a>, an FCS transfer who earned first-team All-ACC honors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">I surveyed coaches and some players to compile a list of possible sleepers for 2025. My goal again was variety, especially with position groups and backgrounds. He played 13 games and had 17 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, 1 quarterback hurry in 2023<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">ESPN recruiting snapshot: Three stars, No. 50 defensive end, No. 4 in Pennsylvania<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Penn State brings back several standouts from a top-10 defense but must replace All-American defensive end <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/4725996\/abdul-carter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Abdul Carter<\/a>, the No. 3 selection in the NFL draft. Fisher didn&#8217;t come to Penn State with major recruiting accolades, and initially started out at linebacker before moving to defensive end. Even with a productive 2023, he has battled injuries during his first three seasons in State College. He&#8217;s a well-rounded defensive end who&#8217;s a mature guy and understands the game. Hunter was a decorated high school recruit who had multiple receptions in 11 of 12 games for Cal last season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Coach&#8217;s take: &#8220;I think he&#8217;s going to be dominant, really talented,&#8221; Nebraska coach Matt Rhule told ESPN. &#8220;Great run after the catch, he&#8217;s like a 1990s tailback playing receiver. He had production at Cal, and he was my favorite guy in the portal. I was like, &#8216;Go get that guy.&#8217; Watching him so far, he&#8217;s a great fit for what [offensive coordinator] Dana [Holgorsen] does. Calhoun played sparingly at Michigan but led Utah in pass breakups last season, while tying for fourth in the Big 12. He had three pass breakups against Iowa State, intercepted a pass against Utah State and also spoiled a 2-point conversion attempt by BYU with an interception in the end zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Coach&#8217;s take: &#8220;He can play inside or outside, has done a really nice job,&#8221; Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer told ESPN. &#8220;He can match up and play man [coverage]. He&#8217;s caught on pretty quickly, so that says a lot about him. Thompson might end up being the most significant, as he&#8217;s pegged to fill a key defensive line spot in coordinator Aaron Henry&#8217;s scheme. Limited by injury in 2024, Thompson started 18 games during the 2022 and 2023 seasons for the Badgers, recording 51 tackles with 5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss. He led all Wisconsin defensive linemen in tackles with 29 in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Coach&#8217;s take: &#8220;He&#8217;s big, he&#8217;s athletic,&#8221; Bielema told ESPN. &#8220;He almost hit 20 miles an hour running the other day. He was like 19.6 or something like that, at 310 pounds. Just his ability to attack the edge, he has a natural twitch and explosion that&#8217;s really, really unique. But he could become a bigger name nationally for a Cougars team that won 11 games last season and returns linebacker <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/4876380\/jack-kelly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jack Kelly<\/a> and other standouts on defense. Tanuvasa started 19 games at Utah and had his biggest season in 2023, when he had 27 tackles, including six for loss and two sacks. He has at least 1.5 tackles for loss in each of the past three seasons, and will fill space for BYU against the run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Coach&#8217;s take: &#8220;Keanu Tanuvasa is going to be a dominant force at the line of scrimmage,&#8221; BYU coach Kalani Sitake told ESPN. &#8220;Our identity has to start there first. He came in here, I love the way he transitioned into it. Gulbin played mostly guard at Wake Forest but competed for the center position at MSU during the offseason. The Spartans need an upgrade at center for returning quarterback <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/5075805\/aidan-chiles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Aidan Chiles<\/a>, and Gulbin, an honorable mention All-ACC selection, probably provides one.
