We won’t get our first in-game glimpse of Aaron Rodgers as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback until Week 1.<\/p>\n

Head coach Mike Tomlin told media Tuesday that Rodgers will sit out the preseason finale<\/a> Thursday against the Carolina Panthers, along with wide receiver DK Metcalf, who also hasn’t played this preseason. Tomlin also said Steelers veterans T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward, who participated in team drills Tuesday<\/a> amid his contract dispute,<\/a> won’t play Thursday.<\/p>\n

Rodgers not playing in the preseason is nothing new for him, or veteran quarterbacks really. He’s only played one preseason game since 2018, for the New York Jets in 2023 as he was acclimating to a new team.<\/p>\n

It might have made sense for Rodgers to play at least a series for Pittsburgh this month, given questions over the schematic fit with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Yahoo Sports’ Nate Tice broke down the partnership on Football 301’s AFC North preview,<\/a> and noted Rodgers isn’t mobile anymore, doesn’t like to throw over the middle of the field where more of the big-play opportunities are, and likes to take his time at the line of scrimmage with very little pre-snap motion, all of which conflicts on some level with what Smith has traditionally wanted his offenses to do.<\/p>\n

That said, Rodgers has spoken fondly<\/a> of the relationship thus far between himself and Smith, and Smith has said<\/a> he’s constructing the offense around Rodgers’ skill set. And Tomlin gave a straight answer for why he was comfortable with Rodgers not playing in preseason.<\/p>\n

“I’m comfortable with what I’ve seen out here,” he said, via NFL Network.<\/a><\/p>\n

There you have it. We’ll see Rodgers play for the Steelers in Week 1 \u2014 at the Jets,<\/a> as it happens.<\/p>\n

Colts name Daniel Jones starting QB over Anthony Richardson: Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters Tuesday that his decision to go with Daniel Jones<\/a> isn’t just a Week 1 arrangement. “He\u2019s the starting quarterback for the season,\u201d Steichen said. “I don\u2019t want to have a short leash on that.” So where does that leave Anthony Richardson Sr.?<\/a> Well, the Colts made a huge gamble on him in the draft, and it could still pay off down the road. It’s not like Jones is a lock to keep the job all season. But the Colts’ brain trust of Steichen and GM Chris Ballard need to win now to keep their jobs, and Richardson has struggled to do that.<\/p>\n

Trey Hendrickson, Bengals still at odds over guaranteed money: Trey Hendrickson spoke<\/a> to ESPN about his contract situation during Monday night’s preseason game vs. the Commanders, and while he offered some hope about a future deal, he made it clear there’s still one major issue preventing him from agreeing to a deal. The star pass rusher said he and the Bengals are close on annual salary and length of his next contract, but the team’s unwillingness to give him guaranteed money remains the sticking point. The Bengals are reportedly willing to guarantee money for one year of Hendrickson’s next contract, but won’t extend the guarantees beyond that. Until they are willing to grant that, it sounds like Hendrickson is willing to remain on the sideline.<\/p>\n

Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. appears to be on his way out: With Brian Robinson Jr. sidelined amid trade rumors<\/a>, Washington ran roughshod over a porous Bengals defense as both teams played their starters early. The Commanders exploded for a four-play, 73-yard touchdown drive on their opening possession without throwing a pass. Running back Chris Rodriguez broke free for a 40-yard run to set up quarterback Jayden Daniels for a 14-yard touchdown scramble through and past multiple hapless Bengals defenders. Then came Jacory Croskey-Merritt’s time to shine. The seventh-round rookie out of Arizona took the starring role on Washington’s second drive with 32 rushing yards as the Commanders needed just three plays to score their second touchdown of the game. Croskey-Merritt capped the drive with a 27-yard touchdown run.<\/p>\n
