Loaded with potential, many felt that Hooker could become a starter at some point in the near future.

Needless to say, things have not exactly worked out that way for Hooker, who has thrown a grand total of nine passes across two NFL seasons.

More news: Denver Broncos Could Acquire Deion Sanders’ Son

Obviously, the University of Tennessee product is playing behind Jared Goff, so there really isn’t much playing time to be had. And to make matters worse, Hooker is apparently going to lose out on the backup quarterback job to Kyle Allen.

“He’s playing better (than Hooker),” Lions head coach Dan Campbell said of Allen, via Colton Pouncy of The Athletic. “So, I would say that right now, if you had to go in (a game) with a (QB2) right now, who would you trust more? Yeah, I would trust Kyle more because he’s proven more after these two games.”

That isn’t exactly a great sign for Hooker considering Allen has been nothing more than pedestrian since entering the league in 2018. But perhaps there is hope for Hooker elsewhere?

Head coach Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions looks on before the game against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on December 22, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois.
Head coach Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions looks on before the game against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on December 22, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois.

It’s becoming increasingly obvious that Hooker is a trade candidate, and he is certainly a compelling one. This is a man who finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting in 2022 after throwing for 3,135 yards, 27 touchdowns and just two interceptions while also rushing for 430 yards and five scores.

Even more, Hooker tallied 58 passing touchdowns to only five picks over the course of his final two collegiate campaigns, a truly incredible feat.

Now you know why the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Hooker was so highly-touted by many when the Lions drafted him in the third round back in 2023.

The problem for Hooker is that he is already 27 years old, and with Goff under contract through 2028, it seems hard to imagine the former ever getting a legitimate opportunity in Detroit.

A trade seems to be the only viable option at this point, and while he has shown next to nothing on the professional level thus far, there has to be a team out there that would be willing to give him a chance.

More news: Saints, Broncos Swing Intriguing WR Trade

Maybe the New Orleans Saints would take a flier on him? Would the Indianapolis Colts try him out? Heck, maybe even the Los Angeles Rams as a potential successor to Matthew Stafford?

Hooker clearly has talent. Whether or not it ever translates in the NFL remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: we will never find out so long as he stays with the Lions.

For more on the Lions and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

A couple of years ago, the Detroit Lions selected a very intriguing quarterback in the NFL Draft: Hendon…

[2071
146,113,2506,7,1211,147,6
0":"post-305267","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-detroit-lions","8":"tag-detroit","9":"tag-detroit-lions","10":"tag-detroitlions","11":"tag-football","12":"tag-hendon-hooker","13":"tag-lions","14":"tag-nfl
["GET
