ALLEN PARK, Mich. \u2013 Detroit Lions<\/a> head coach Dan Campbell<\/a> spoke about the team\u2019s final big practice of training camp, roster decisions, and his philosophy on football as the regular season approaches.<\/p>\n

Campbell expressed excitement about the competitive practice ahead and respect for Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans and his team\u2019s style of play. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey hustle, they hit, they\u2019re disciplined. It\u2019ll be a good test for us,\u201d said Campbell.<\/p>\n

When asked about activating a player like defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo<\/a>, who has been out for an extended period, Campbell acknowledged the difficulty of evaluating readiness with limited practice time. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s done all he can do to this point. Now it\u2019s time for football to see where he\u2019s at. It\u2019s tough. There\u2019s no easy answer to that,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

Regarding players like defensive end Josh Paschal<\/a>, Campbell said his return might be later than hoped, which clarifies roster decisions. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat could sting a little bit. It also cleans it up, too. At least you\u2019re not hoping and waiting,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

Campbell described the challenge of finalizing the 53-man roster amid strong competition. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking for the best 69 players we can find. We\u2019re going to need all of them,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

Campbell emphasized balancing the body of work over camp with recent performance improvements when making decisions. <\/p>\n

\u201cBody of work is always going to speak for itself, but if you\u2019re a late climber. Now, today is pretty significant,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

Campbell said his evaluation philosophy has remained consistent since he arrived, but roster circumstances have changed. <\/p>\n

\u201cAny changes that were made were because of where we\u2019re at now roster-wise. I wouldn\u2019t say philosophy anything has changed,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

Campbell highlighted the growing importance of depth on the roster and practice squad. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat vet squad is going to be very important,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

On trusting the team\u2019s personnel director, Brad Holmes<\/a>, for roster decisions, Campbell said, \u201cIf he says somebody\u2019s going to make it through, they make it through. I trust that.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked about keeping three quarterbacks on the roster, Campbell acknowledged the trade-off with depth at other positions. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou lose depth in D-line or O-line or receiver or defensive back, or linebacker. Depth, depth, depth,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

Campbell reaffirmed his belief in the importance of running the ball and stopping the run as foundational to team success. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019ve got a strong ground game, it opens up your offense. Defensively, if you can\u2019t stop the run, good luck. It\u2019s demoralizing,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

Campbell praised the Texans as a promising young team with good coaching and talent, looking forward to practicing against them. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re going to be a juggernaut for years to come,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n

Campbell also complimented former Michigan Wolverines<\/a> wide receiver Nico Collins<\/a> for his skills and impact on the offense. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a crafty route runner, plays strong, plays physical, elevates that offense,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n
