With that pick, they sent a clear message: they plan to use Hunter as a true football player—on both sides of the ball. However, his journey will begin in the wide receiver room.

“They won’t do a lot of install, but you’ll see a lot of Travis Hunter on the field,” said NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe. “And one thing that was reiterated to me this week is that Travis Hunter will start off as a wide receiver first.”

Wolfe added, “He’s going to get most of his reps at wide receiver, then transition into learning defensive back as the summer progresses. It was explained to me that he’ll ‘major’ in offense and ‘minor’ in defense—but the long-term goal is for him to become a double major, just like he was at Colorado.”

In line with that vision, the Jaguars made a significant roster move on Wednesday, announcing the release of wide receiver Gabriel Davis. Davis, a former Buffalo Bills standout, had signed with Jacksonville earlier in the 2024 offseason, but the addition of Hunter appears to have shifted the team’s direction at the position.

The move certainly carries significant financial repercussions, as Gabriel Davis had signed a three-year, $39 million deal with the Jaguars earlier in the offseason. By releasing him, Jacksonville will now absorb a $20.3 million dead cap hit.

In 10 games with the team, Davis managed just 239 receiving yards, a sharp decline from his impact in Buffalo, where he was a key piece of the offense. His standout moment came in the 2022 AFC Divisional Round, when he scored four touchdowns against the Kansas City Chiefs—a performance that cemented his big-game reputation.

<img alt="The Jacksonville Jaguars’ first-round pick, Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver and defensive back Travis Hunter.
