On the same day that the Denver Broncos<\/a> opted to carry five wide receivers on their initial 53-man roster<\/a>, the New York Giants<\/a> cut one of coach Sean Payton’s old favorites.<\/p>\n

Lil’Jordan Humphrey was cut by the Giants<\/a> on Tuesday, and he’s a vested veteran, so he won’t have to clear the NFL’s waiver wire. So, could the Broncos<\/a> bring him back? It seems unlikely.<\/p>\n

Denver will only dress five wide receivers on game days, and Humphrey isn’t going to beat out any of Courtland Sutton<\/a>,\u00a0Marvin Mims<\/a>,\u00a0Troy Franklin<\/a> or\u00a0Pat Bryant<\/a>\u00a0for a receiving role. Humphrey was an excellent blocker and a special teams contributor, but that job is now held by Trent Sherfield<\/a>, who is a favorite of special teams coach Darren Rizzi.<\/p>\n

So there’s not room for Humphrey on the game-day roster, and it wouldn’t make sense to carry him on the active roster if he’s going to be inactive. The Broncos could consider Humphrey for their practice squad, but the receiver left for a fresh start<\/a> with the Giants<\/a> this spring, so he seems more likely to join New York’s practice squad.<\/p>\n

Nothing can be ruled out this time of year, but Humphrey seems unlikely to return to Denver.<\/p>\n
