George Pickens might be extra motivated to prove Wednesday\u2019s trade was worth it for the Dallas Cowboys<\/a> this season.<\/p>\n

The reason is that Pickens, whom the Cowboys sent a third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round selection for<\/a>, is entering the final year of his rookie deal. He will hit free agency in 2026, unless Dallas is motivated to re-sign the University of Georgia product after this season.<\/p>\n

A person with knowledge of the receiver\u2019s thinking told The News that Pickens isn\u2019t seeking a contract extension with the Cowboys, knowing he must prove himself.<\/p>\n

After being drafted with the 52nd overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pickens signed a 4 year $6.75 million contract.<\/p>\n

Pickens is set to make $3,656,000 this season as a Cowboy. According to Spotrac<\/a>, he carries a 4-year, $102M ($25.5M APY) valuation in their system.<\/p>\n

That $3.6 million number Pickens is set to make this year is minuscule when compared to the likes of CeeDee Lamb, who, on average, will be making $34 million a year after signing a 4-year, $136 million extension with the Cowboys back in August<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A notable recent example of a high-profile second receiver entering a contract year after running out his rookie deal would be Cincinnati Bengals\u2019 WR Tee Higgins. Higgins signed a four-year 8.68 million rookie deal<\/a> after being drafted, and Cincinnati extended the 26-year-old for four years $115 million back in March after he totaled 911 yards and 10 touchdowns.<\/p>\n

The Cowboys could be put in a precarious position financially if Pickens has a standout year in Dallas, as, according to Spotrac<\/a>, they are projected to have $21.5 million in cap space. They are also expected to resign star pass rusher Micah Parsons, making the team\u2019s financial constraints in the coming years even greater.<\/p>\n
