The New York Jets nailed their colors to Justin Fields’<\/a> mast this offseason by already announcing that he will be offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand’s starting quarterback.<\/p>\n

With veteran Tyrod Taylor on the roster, for some, the decision to make Fields the starter before a training camp battle was a little odd, but Tyrod is nothing but a professional.<\/p>\n

This is Fields’ ship, and he knows that as he looks to help the quarterback room in any way he can, but in an interview with ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Taylor made it clear that despite him now being the backup, his mindset hasn’t changed.<\/p>\n

“Whether I did or whether I didn’t, my mindset and the way I condition myself to get ready for a season since my rookie year has been [to] approach each and every day as if you’re the starter,” Taylor said<\/a>. “As a quarterback, you’re an opportunity away, so you want to be well prepared for that opportunity.”<\/p>\n

We know that in the NFL, all it takes is a couple of bad games, and the noise around the starter getting benched gathers momentum.<\/p>\n

Taylor is no stranger to that, nor is he a stranger to being a backup and helping the starter navigate all the trials and tribulations that come with the job.<\/p>\n

He’s a pro’s pro, and in 2025, he will be looking to help Fields be the best version of himself as the Jets’ starting quarterback.<\/p>\n

But being the professional that he is, he’s staying ready for if a chance comes his way, and if given Fields’ history, one might.<\/p>\n
