Bonitto won’t get an extension that rich, but he knows the edge rusher market is trending in his favor. While he waits for an extension, Bonitto has had a perfect mentality.

“At the end of the day, I’m still under contract for another year, so, yeah, I would like to get it done, but that’s like the least of my worries, honestly,” Bonitto said last week. “I just want to compete for a championship this year [and] do all the things that we have set out to do as a team and as a defense.”

Another player entering the final year of his contract is defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers, whom the team acquired from the New York Jets last spring in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick. JFM has made it clear on social media that he wants a big raise on his next deal. It remains to be seen if Denver will be able to re-sign him, but they’d like to.

“John is a really good player,” Paton said. “[It was a] big bonus we were able to get John last year. Like a number of other of our players in the final year of their deals, we’d like to have them all back. John’s no different. We have a number of players, and it’s a puzzle, kind of like your roster management, like the 53-man. So we’re working through a lot of that now. We’re excited to have John Franklin, we’re excited to have [Luke] Wattenberg and a lot of these guys in the last year of their deals.”

While Bonitto extension talks continue and JFM waits in line, the Broncos are happy about the deals they’ve gotten done so far: Sutton, Allen, guard Quinn Meinerz, cornerback Pat Surtain, outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper and left tackle Garett Bolles since last summer. Paton was asked specifically about bringing back Sutton on Thursday.

“Courtland, since I arrived he’s been a huge piece of this team, this organization,” the GM said. “He’s been through the ups, and the downs, the injuries, the lack of continuity and the coaches. He stayed the course. He’s been a leader despite all this. So it was really important, especially the way he played last year, to keep Courtland. We have a young [wide receivers] room. It’s ‘Court’, and then the rest are 24, 25 [years old] and below. He sets the tone really for that room. He sets the tone for this offense. It was important to keep him.”

Bonitto should be up next.

Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X!
