Baltimore Ravens<\/a> wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins said farewell to the Kansas City Chiefs after a convincing 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles<\/a> in Super Bowl LIX. Hopkins wasn’t much of a factor in the game<\/a>, posting a crucial pass drop and just two catches on five targets that amounted to 18 yards and one late-game touchdown.<\/p>\n

Hopkins was operating in the last year of his two-year deal with the Tennessee Titans<\/a>. The Titans surrendered Hopkins for a conditional 2025 NFL Draft pick before the 2024 season. Moreover, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid likely assessed the roster and consulted with the administration. He decided that he could rely on youth moving forward instead of trying to reignite a dwindling flame with Hopkins. With wide receivers Rasheed Rice, Xavier Worthy, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Hollywood Brown, and veteran tight-end Travis Kelce to sustain what has been acclaimed as one of the best passing attacks in the NFL, Reid and the Chiefs are headed to higher ground.<\/p>\n

Similarly, the Ravens have two pass-catching tight ends in Isaiah Likely and Mark Andrews, plus emerging wide receivers in Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman, and Devontez Walker.\u00a0All of these said Ravens\u2019 players possess the youth and elusiveness sufficient enough to excel in the team offense, even if Hopkins never arrived. Thus, Hopkins must be willing to accept more of a complementary (not primary) role in the offense, or things could get off track with offensive coordinator Todd Monken.<\/p>\n

While Hopkins undoubtedly possesses the skills to be an asset to the Ravens, an overemphasis on getting him targets might actually become a distraction. Ball distribution will be an ongoing story for Monken and the Ravens offense throughout the 2025 season. Reid and the Chiefs decided to move on from Hopkins, and understanding why can help Monken to better manage Hopkins\u2019 utility in 2025.<\/p>\n
