Texas\u2019 starting quarterback went from being a prospect with a perfect score in the 247Sports Composite to the 233rd selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, a far cry from what was expected when he graduated high school early to sign with <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"191\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/ohio-state-buckeyes-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ohio State<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ewers, however, avoided becoming the second No. 1 recruit in the modern era to go undrafted. Former Georgia defensive lineman <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"iwuQ9370qYZfIrDC\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/trenton-thompson-iwuQ9370qYZfIrDC\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trenton Thompson<\/a> (Class of 2015) earned that distinction in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>So, how have Ewers\u2019 fellow Class of 2021 recruits fared in the NFL Draft?<\/p>\n<p>In all, 140 recruits in the cycle have been drafted over the last two years, including 23 first-rounders.<\/p>\n<p>Others still have eligibility and are returning for their fifth year of college football (more on them shortly). Here\u2019s a closer look at where things stand with the top-100 recruits in the cycle:<\/p>\n<p>Off to the pros<\/p>\n<p>In all, 70 players in the 2021 class were taken on the first or second day of the draft (first three rounds) over the last two years. Twenty-five were former top-100 recruits.<\/p>\n<p>No. 3 <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"0PP0sIeroIjJLFgO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/jc-latham-0PP0sIeroIjJLFgO\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JC Latham<\/a> (2024, first round, seventh pick)<br \/>\nNo. 4 J.T. the top 100 recruits in the cycle transferred at least once in their college careers.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 41 top-100 prospects who were drafted, only seven were transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Four were quarterbacks:<\/p>\n<p>Caleb Williams (Oklahoma \u2192 USC)<br \/>\nQuinn Ewers (Ohio State \u2192 Texas)<br \/>\nKyle McCord (Ohio State \u2192 <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"167\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/syracuse-orange-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Syracuse<\/a>)<br \/>\n<a class=\"ath_autolink\" target=\"_blank\">BYU<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>At this point, most of the top-100 recruits in the cycle who are still playing college football have transferred at least once.<\/p>\n<p>Center <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"cicSmtnNktDLOAyX\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/bryce-foster-cicSmtnNktDLOAyX\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bryce Foster<\/a>, who has 40 career starts, including 12 last season at Kansas after transferring from Texas A&amp;M, is the most experienced returning top-100 recruit. In all, there are 14 players with at least 15 career starts returning next season.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the remaining returning standouts:<\/p>\n<p>Clemson offensive tackle <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"ceDxm4jsDWRG8XWm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/tristan-leigh-ceDxm4jsDWRG8XWm\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tristan Leigh<\/a> (five-star, No. 14): The Fairfax, Va., native has started 23 games over the last two seasons at left tackle after playing only 70 snaps his first two years in college.<\/p>\n<p>Arkansas linebacker <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"HfrGnzUYIanbOSct\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/xavian-sorey-jr-HfrGnzUYIanbOSct\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Xavian Sorey Jr.<\/a> (five-star, No. 26): The Florida native started two games in three years at Georgia before leaving for Arkansas last season. He led the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"264\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/arkansas-razorbacks-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Razorbacks<\/a> with 99 tackles, including 9.5 for loss and two sacks.<\/p>\n<p>Ole Miss defensive back <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"mRwW4pNrr0YoOflG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/sage-ryan-mRwW4pNrr0YoOflG\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sage Ryan<\/a> (five-star, No. 30): Ryan started 21 games for the Tigers \u2014 10 at cornerback, four at safety and seven at nickel \u2014 before leaving for Ole Miss in the winter portal window. He had 24 tackles in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>USC defensive lineman <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"k36ncHFeE3WfSXkA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/keeshawn-silver-k36ncHFeE3WfSXkA\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Keeshawn Silver<\/a> (five-star, No. 31): The Rocky Mount, N.C., native signed with <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"174\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/north-carolina-tar-heels-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North Carolina<\/a> but didn\u2019t start a game in two seasons. He started 23 games, including all 12 last season, in two years at Kentucky. He\u2019s now at his third school.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"249\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/arizona-state-sun-devils-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arizona State<\/a> edge rusher <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"ruOPNFfkNZMlXeGJ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/clayton-smith-ruOPNFfkNZMlXeGJ\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clayton Smith<\/a> (four-star, No. 38): The Texas native played in only eight games in two seasons for Oklahoma before leaving for Tempe. He started 12 games last season for the Big 12 champions and led them with 4.5 sacks and six tackles for loss.<\/p>\n<p>Alabama linebacker <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"v6qkuLvifQQriCIx\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/deontae-lawson-v6qkuLvifQQriCIx\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deontae Lawson<\/a> (four-star, No. 52): The Crimson Tide\u2019s second-leading tackler likely would have been drafted had he not suffered a season-ending knee injury in a loss at Oklahoma late in the 2024 season. He was a third-team All-SEC selection in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Nebraska offensive lineman <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"0FAIKtShFD41D3Z2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/rocco-spindler-0FAIKtShFD41D3Z2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rocco Spindler<\/a> (four-star, No. 60): The Michigan native started 23 games at right guard over the last two years for Notre Dame before leaving to join the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"198\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/nebraska-cornhuskers-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cornhuskers<\/a> this winter.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"158\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/smu-mustangs-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SMU<\/a> offensive lineman <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"CLeNujjjYaK7Urc9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/savion-byrd-CLeNujjjYaK7Urc9\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Savion Byrd<\/a> (four-star, No. 64): Byrd started five games at Oklahoma before leaving to join the Mustangs last season. He transferred to Texas A&amp;M last year and finished fourth on the team with 43 tackles in 10 starts.<\/p>\n<p>Nebraska cornerback <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"mtnzZxsFxCAZZMit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/ceyair-wright-mtnzZxsFxCAZZMit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ceyair Wright<\/a> (four-star, No. 80): The Los Angeles native left USC for Lincoln after starting 15 games for the Trojans through the 2023 season. The Alabama native began his career at Auburn.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan offensive lineman <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"emYSIwKMeKg7GfHm\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/giovanni-el-hadi-emYSIwKMeKg7GfHm\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Giovanni El-Hadi<\/a> (four-star, No. 88): The Michigan native started 13 games at right guard last season for the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"192\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/michigan-wolverines-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wolverines<\/a> after playing mostly on special teams in his first three seasons in Ann Arbor.<\/p>\n<p>Florida defensive lineman <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"TiySW3oZMaiYUxDv\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/tyreak-sapp-TiySW3oZMaiYUxDv\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyreak Sapp<\/a> (four-star, No. 100): Sapp, a Fort Lauderdale native, has started 20 games in his career, and he led the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"258\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/florida-gators-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gators<\/a> with seven sacks and 13 tackles for loss in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Looking for fresh starts<\/p>\n<p>We mentioned more than half of the top 100 recruits in the 2021 cycle have changed schools at least once.<\/p>\n<p>None have moved more than receiver <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"wqW8djnrD25faUR9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/agiye-hall-wqW8djnrD25faUR9\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Agiye Hall<\/a>, defensive lineman <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"m34c0ONay54sbyLG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/tunmise-adeleye-m34c0ONay54sbyLG\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tunmise Adeleye<\/a> and quarterbacks <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"jajrWMJeVxZeww2d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/sam-huard-jajrWMJeVxZeww2d\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Huard<\/a> and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"DxLhBV7rYsvFcWu1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/jake-garcia-DxLhBV7rYsvFcWu1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Garcia<\/a>. They\u2019re all either at or headed to their fourth school.<\/p>\n<p>Hall signed with Alabama, transferred to Texas a year later, left for UCF in 2024 and is now at Sacramento State. Adeleye signed with Texas A&amp;M, left for <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"190\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/michigan-state-spartans-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan State<\/a> two years later, played for <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"278\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/texas-state-bobcats-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Texas State<\/a> last season and is now at <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"238\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/unlv-rebels-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UNLV<\/a>. Hall has yet to start a game in college, and Adeleye started three games for the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"237\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/san-jose-state-spartans-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spartans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Huard, a former five-star Washington signee, left Utah for USC this winter. Huard made nine of his 10 career starts for Cal Poly in 2023. Garcia, who made one start in two seasons with <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"176\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/miami-hurricanes-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Miami<\/a>, never saw the field at Missouri in 2023 and started six games at East Carolina last season before re-entering the portal this spring. He still hasn\u2019t found a home.<\/p>\n<p>In all, eight of the top 100 recruits in the 2021 cycle have yet to start a game after four seasons in college. Here are some other notable players still looking to make a bigger impact:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"241\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/fresno-state-bulldogs-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fresno State<\/a> defensive lineman <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"WKt7OUUfuHFvUMEU\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/korey-foreman-WKt7OUUfuHFvUMEU\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Korey Foreman<\/a> (five-star, No. 2): It was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/4227087\/2021\/01\/02\/korey-foreman-2021s-no-1-recruit-commits-to-usc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a big deal when Foreman signed with USC<\/a> over Arizona State, Clemson, Georgia and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"267\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/lsu-tigers-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LSU<\/a>. He produced 2.5 sacks in three years for the Trojans before landing at Fresno State last year. He had 24 tackles, three sacks and three forced fumbles while making one start for the Bulldogs in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Penn State offensive lineman <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"QYcSHkb3ykGIenGs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/nolan-rucci-QYcSHkb3ykGIenGs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nolan Rucci<\/a> (five-star, No. 16): Rucci left his home state to sign with <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"197\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/wisconsin-badgers-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wisconsin<\/a> but played a total of 70 snaps in three seasons. He returned home to play for the Nittany Lions last season and started six games at right tackle. He\u2019s competing to be a starter in 2025.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"159\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/tulane-green-wave-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tulane<\/a> tight end <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"RD5uuVTqln9PAKRM\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/ty-thompson-RD5uuVTqln9PAKRM\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ty Thompson<\/a> (four-star, No. 40): Thompson appeared in 17 games as a backup quarterback in three years at Oregon and then departed for Tulane after the 2023 season. He finally made his first college start, in a Gasparilla Bowl loss to Florida last December, but is now angling to be Tulane\u2019s starting tight end this fall.<\/p>\n<p>UNLV receiver <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"o5BxdWOLVkqvauKj\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/jojo-earle-o5BxdWOLVkqvauKj\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JoJo Earle<\/a> (four-star, No. 47): He spent two seasons at Alabama and two at <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"187\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/tcu-horned-frogs-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TCU<\/a> and will finish his career playing for Dan Mullen at UNLV. He has 47 career catches for 579 yards and five touchdowns.<\/p>\n<p>Syracuse offensive lineman Terrence Ferguson II (four-star, No. 58): The Georgia native began his career at Alabama, where he started one game in three years. Last year at <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"166\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/florida-state-seminoles-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Florida State<\/a>, Ferguson started seven games at left guard.\u00a0 He\u2019s now fighting for a role with Fran Brown and the Orange.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona State cornerback <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"jeq8QIcB3LKCqc8Z\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/nyland-green-jeq8QIcB3LKCqc8Z\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nyland Green<\/a> (four-star, No. 72): He played 143 defensive snaps in three seasons at Georgia before finally getting on the field regularly for <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"200\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/purdue-boilermakers-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purdue<\/a> last season. Green started seven games for the Boilermakers in 2024 but departed for Arizona State in January.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"230\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/western-michigan-broncos-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Western Michigan<\/a> receiver <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"6Sn4faPdvgEBuGTR\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/christian-leary-6Sn4faPdvgEBuGTR\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Leary<\/a> (four-star, No. 75): The Alabama signee spent the last two years at <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"172\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/georgia-tech-yellow-jackets-college-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Georgia Tech<\/a> before leaving for Kalamazoo. He finally got it in 2024, but was benched after starting nine games.
