Texas football<\/a>\u00a0may have entered the season as the\u00a0nation\u2019s unanimous No. 1 team<\/a>, but the Longhorns now have some questions after falling Week 1 to Ohio State 14-7.<\/a><\/p>\n

What\u2019s wrong with quarterback\u00a0Arch Manning<\/a>, who kept missing open receivers against the Buckeyes? Why couldn\u2019t the vaunted\u00a0Texas defense<\/a>\u00a0get a single sack or at least one takeaway<\/a>? And why does\u00a0the offense<\/a>\u00a0continue to struggle in the red zone?<\/p>\n

Now ranked No. 7, the Longhorns hope to provide some answers in Saturday\u2019s home opener against San Jos\u00e9 State<\/a>.<\/p>\n

San Jos\u00e9\u00a0State, which competes in the Mountain West Conference, man not provide much challenge at all considering the disparity between the two programs, but the Spartans have a history of\u00a0springing the occasional upset<\/a>. Their version of the run-and-shoot offense \u2014 which head coach Ken Niumatalolo likes to call the \u201cspread and shred\u201d \u2014 will provide a different kind of test for the Texas defense, and more struggles from Manning and the Texas offense would cause plenty of rumbling in the home stands.<\/p>\n

Alex January: DT reportedly out against San Jose State<\/p>\n

According to Chip Brown of 247Sports, starting defensive tackle Alex January will miss Saturday’s game with an undisclosed injury. January, a 6-foot-5, 308-pound sophomore, is listed as a starter on the Longhorns’ two-deep roster.\u00a0<\/p>\n

RB\u00a0Quintrevion Wisner not suited up<\/p>\n

Starting running back Quintrevion Wisner is not suited up during warm-ups <\/a>and will apparently miss today’s game against San Jose State. Wisner ran for 1,064 yards last season and entered 2025 as the leading returning rusher in the SEC. In last week’s 14-7 loss to Ohio State in the season-opener, Wisner ran for a team-high 80 yards while sharing carries with CJ Baxter. If Wisner does not play, expect Baxter to carry a heavier load in the backfield and expect reserves Jerrick Douglas\u00a0and Christian Clark to get some touches after not getting any carries against the Buckeyes.<\/p>\n

DB\u00a0Wardell\u00a0Mack active after arrest<\/p>\n

Texas football defensive back Wardell Mack, who was arrested<\/a> by the Travis County Sheriff’s Office overnight Wednesday on driving while intoxicated charge, will play Saturday. Mack, a redshirt freshman, is listed as the top backup to starting “star” defensive back Graceson Littleton.\u00a0Earlier this week, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said \u201cwe’re obviously monitoring the authorities and where they stand on it, and then anything that happens beyond that, we’ll handle internally.\u201d<\/p>\n
