{"id":349669,"date":"2025-09-07T19:19:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-07T19:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/349669\/"},"modified":"2025-09-07T19:19:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T19:19:10","slug":"patriots-notes-peppers-woods-wilson-belichick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/349669\/","title":{"rendered":"Patriots Notes: Peppers, Woods, Wilson, Belichick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Patriots overhauled their approach to the safety position this year by cutting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PeppJa00.htm?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-09-07_pfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jabrill Peppers<\/a> and benching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DuggKy00.htm?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-09-07_pfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kyle Dugger<\/a>, their starting duo for the past few seasons.<\/p>\n<p>The two veterans are better at playing downhill than covering the deep areas of field, the latter of which is what new head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/V\/VrabMi20.htm?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-09-07_pfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mike Vrabel<\/a> looks for in his safeties. Those roles will now be filled by former Falcon and Charger\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HawkJa00.htm?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-09-07_pfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jaylinn Hawkins<\/a> and fourth-round rookie Craig Woodson.<\/p>\n<p>New England put Dugger on the trade block before roster cut-downs, but his $9.75MM guaranteed salary was likely a significant obstacle to a deal. The Patriots also looked into moving Peppers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/46109041\/new-england-patriots-roster-cuts-boston-bruins-marco-sturm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">per ESPN\u2019s Mike Reiss<\/a>, but similarly received little interest despite a more tradable contract with only $4.3MM in guaranteed salary remaining.<\/p>\n<p>Pepper has yet to catch on with another team, though he will have a better chance at signing after Week 1 when veteran salaries are non-guaranteed. Dugger, meanwhile, seems headed out of New England within the next year. The Patriots could try to re-bait the hook at the trade deadline if there are safety injuries around the league; if no club bites, he\u2019ll likely be a cap casualty next offseason.<\/p>\n<p>New England was the only team to claim Rams cornerback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WoodCh01.htm?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-09-07_pfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Charles Woods<\/a> off waivers, according to Reiss. He worked closely with new Patriots vice president of football operations and strategy\u00a0John Streicher on Los Angeles\u2019 special teams unit in 2024. The Patriots also claimed Colts cornerback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JoneJa13,JoneJa12&amp;search=Jaylon+Jones&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-09-07_pfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jaylon Jones<\/a> with priority over the Bears, but they rescinded their claim after securing Woods.<br \/>\nThe Patriots were also the only team to claim quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DeViTo00.htm?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-09-07_pfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tommy DeVito<\/a>, per Reiss, despite reports that he would receive more interest on the waiver wire.<br \/>\nNew England is entering the 2025 season with almost $47MM of cap space and won\u2019t come close to hitting the ceiling this year. However, they will be able to roll over this year\u2019s space to set up more spending next offseason, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonherald.com\/2025\/09\/01\/patriots-mailbag-will-efton-chism-see-playing-time-this-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">per Doug Kyed of the Boston Hearld<\/a>.<br \/>\nHead coach\u00a0Mike Vrabel\u00a0named rookie Jared Wilson as the Week 1 starter at left guard. The third-round pick out of Georgia will line up between fellow rookie Will Campbell and veteran\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BradGa00.htm?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.profootballrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-09-07_pfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Garrett Bradbury<\/a>.<br \/>\nBill Belichick addressed his decision to ban the Patriots from North Carolina\u2019s facilities during a recent press conference, saying (<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/davidubben\/status\/1964523181009494196\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">via The Athletic\u2019s David Ubben<\/a>), \u201cIt\u2019s clear I\u2019m not welcome there at their facility.
