Others… not so much. Waiver wire additions can be the difference between making it to fantasy football glory and fizzling out after a lackluster Week 1. Don’t be that guy; let’s find some gems on the waiver wire after Week 1’s action.

Note: Roster percentage is taken from Sleeper as of the evening games in Week 1.

Waiver Wire Pickups Following Week 1 – Chargers Wide Receivers and More
Quentin Johnston and Keenan Allen – Los Angeles Chargers Wide Receivers

Wide receivers can sometimes be fool’s gold on the waiver wire. Fantasy points aren’t the best indicator here; a better route to go is actually targets and route percentage. The Chargers let it fly on Friday, and both Keenan Allen and Quentin Johnston were on the receiving end. Ladd McConkey will still get his, but if Justin Herbert throws it over 30 times a game, there’s plenty of room for both of these guys to eat. Tre Harris and Keandre Lambert-Smith are going to have to wait their turns.

Quentin Johnston is available in over 90% of leagues, Keenan Allen in 40%.

Hollywood Brown – Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver

Xavier Worthy is dealing with an injury, Rashee Rice is suspended, and the team is looking for solutions. Until they bring in another playmaker, it’s Hollywood Brown and Mahomes’ choice of:

Tyquan Thornton
Juju Smith-Schuster
Ancient Travis Kelce
Noah Gray
Jason Brownlee

It’s unfortunate, but Hollywood Brown just found himself extremely important at work. Maybe they move Brashard Smith back to wide receiver, his former position.

Hollywood Brown is available in 60% of leagues.

Kenneth Gainwell – Pittsburgh Steelers Running Back

Gainwell operated as the team’s RB2 for most of the afternoon. Kaleb Johnson looks like he’s going to be brought along slowly, so Gainwell is a stash in case of a Jaylen Warren injury.

Gainwell is available in 95% of leagues.

D.J. Giddens – Indianapolis Colts Running Back

Another clear backup, Giddens showcased that he is the number two in Indianapolis. Not every game will result in a blowout, but Jonathan Taylor has been far from the picture of health in his career. If he misses time, Giddens would be nice to have on the bench already instead of scrambling to a future waiver wire.

Giddens is available in 89% of leagues.

Juwan Johnson – New Orleans Saints Tight End

Johnson had a whopping 11 targets in Week 1. He was clearly one of Rattler’s favorite targets, and 11 targets is hard to find for a tight end. It’s unlikely Rattler throws over 40 times a game moving forward, but a 25% target share is nice to have from a free tight end.

Johnson is available in 95% of leagues.

Harold Fannin Jr. – Cleveland Browns Tight End

We’ve got a day three tight end taking wild cat snaps and earning nine targets in Week 1? The NFL is so back. Fannin’s drumbeat all summer has been hard to ignore, but he’s still sitting free on waivers. He outproduced David Njoku, and had usage that is almost perfect for fantasy football.

Fannin Jr. is available in 94% of fantasy football leagues.

Superflex Leagues Target – Jaxson Dart, Giants Quarterback

Russell Wilson’s days are numbered. Dart remains available across a ton of leagues, and check if he is still free in those formats.

Honorable Mentions

Calvin Austin III
Cedric Tillman
Elic Ayomanor
Kendre Miller
Blake Corum
Noah Fant

Main Photo Credit: Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

Week 1 is in the books, and some of our fantasy football teams are crushing it.
