ENGLEWOOD, Colo. \u2014 Owners Greg Penner and Carrie Walton Penner have often expressed their goal of the Broncos being the best team to play for, work for and cheer for.<\/p>\n
And in the eyes of quarterback Bo Nix, that vision and that standard was on display with the announcement of Burnham Yard as the preferred site for a new privately funded retractable roof stadium and mixed-use district.<\/p>\n
“It’s exciting,” Nix said. “Our ownership has a big vision for what this organization is going to be. I think everyone else is just going to follow their lead.”<\/p>\n
Nix, who would be entering Year 8 of his career for the targeted 2031 opening, said the players in the locker room are excited about the announcement and what is to come.<\/p>\n
“It’s a big step for our team, [a] big step for our organization,” Nix said. “I know there’s a lot of work to be put into it, but it’s exciting.”<\/p>\n
Head Coach Sean Payton emphasized that the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group is “extremely good with a vision” and pointed to the new Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit as an example.<\/p>\n
“Collectively \u2026 our goal is to be here to participate in that new vision,” Payton said. “I think it’s great for the city.”<\/p>\n
Payton also detailed the value in a retractable roof stadium, which will give the Broncos the potential to host Super Bowls and other high-profile events. He indicated during the season, the Broncos could continue to play games in the elements.<\/p>\n
“There’s a sterileness sometimes if you choose to go with the roof,” Payton said. “There’s an advantage for the home team [with the roof open]. Natural grass, it’s healthier for the players. We wouldn’t want to confuse a closed roof with changing how the altitude affects you. \u2026 I just think the elements are important, and I know from speaking with Greg and Carrie and their vision and plan, [it’s about] just having that flexibility to control it to some degree. \u2026 Look, it’s forward-thinking.”<\/p>\n
All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II \u2014 who would be entering Year 11 in 2031 \u2014 said the announcement is a reflection of the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group’s commitment to the franchise. He noted their willingness to pursue new ideas, as well as their emphasis on prioritizing what the players need to be successful.<\/p>\n
“It’s a testament to our ownership group, always [pushing for] new levels, new heights,” Surtain said. “\u2026 I think starting that [stadium process] up \u2026 is huge for the team and the organization.<\/p>\n
