EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) \u2013 The NCAA eliminated the spring transfer portal for college football Wednesday afternoon, officially moving to one portal window.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s healthy for the game,\u201d said New Mexico State football head coach, Tony Sanchez. \u201cAt the end of the day, I think all of us coaches and honestly players too, you should be able to coach your team for one solid year. You should have one year where you have your team, you coach your team, and then if things change \u2013 they change. But you shouldn\u2019t be sitting there in May going, \u2018man, I got to, you know, fill six or seven spots\u2019 . I think the players should have an opportunity to change venue if they need to. But, the spring portals nonsensical and I think we all agree with that. I mean all it is is tampering in the spring. I think we\u2019re starting to realize that we need to put some parameters around this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The portal system will remain the same for athletes \u2013 the only change being they will only have one chance a year in deciding to stay or to go.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re the only sport that had two window,\u201d said UTEP football head coach, Scotty Walden. \u201cI just want to know that like when we go to spring ball, that\u2019s my team. I think as coaches, we just want that level of consistency and I think that\u2019s going to help these kids to have an opportunity to explore their options if they choose to do that. But windows is just hard to develop continuity that way.\u201d<\/p>\n
In terms of when the portal will be open, that is still up for debate. It was initially proposal that athletes will have 10 days to declare from January 2nd through January 11th, but has yet to be confirmed.<\/p>\n
The committee will meet once more in October to discuss further details.<\/p>\n
