New York Jets (0-3)

Last Week: 26

Week 3 Results: Lost vs. Tampa Bay 29-27

The New York Jets didn’t seem to miss much, if anything, offensively with Tyrod Taylor in at quarterback for Justin Fields on Sunday. New York doubled the previous week’s point total even before adding seven on a blocked field goal and a 50-yard touchdown return by Will McDonald IV.

What’s alarming about the Jets through three weeks is the fact that their defense keeps struggling. It surrendered 64 points over the first two weeks and crumbled when it needed one last stop in Week 3.

This isn’t what Jets fans expected when former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn was hired as head coach. It’s worth noting, though, that the Jets had a league-worst defense during Robert Saleh’s first season before fielding a top-five unit in Year 2.

Turning around this franchise was never going to be a short process.

<img alt="Sep 21, 2025; Tampa, Florida, USA; New York Jets quarterback Tyrod Taylor (2) looks to pass against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second quarter at Raymond James Stadium. Tyrod Taylor took a different approach in relief of Fields on Sunday, keeping everything short, and ranks 35th among 36 quarterbacks in air yards per throw. New York’s schedule gets a lot easier the next two weeks, but so far, Aaron Glenn needs more from his quarterback.

Up next: at Dolphins, Monday, 7:15 p.m. ET

<img alt="Sep 21, 2025; Tampa, Florida, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers outside linebacker Haason Reddick (5) and cornerback Jamel Dean (35) tackle New York Jets running back Breece Hall (20) during the second half at Raymond James Stadium. New York Jets (-)

Aaron Glenn doesn’t have a win as head coach yet, and he might get sick of moral victories after notching his second in three weeks. As they did during their Week 1 loss to Pittsburgh, the Jets hung tough and took a late lead, only to see it evaporate. Sunday’s comeback push against the Bucs was exceptionally improbable, considering the score, the location and the quality of the opponent, but Glenn’s team came up a few plays short. There were plenty of positives, but also enough negatives not to celebrate much. Tyrod Taylor threw for two TDs and used his legs well, but he was sacked four times and under heavy fire, including on a brutal pick-six before the half. Taylor helped the Jets dig themselves out of a huge deficit, but they were playing out of character — and out of desperation. If they want to be a run-heavy, defense-driven team, there’s still a whole lot of work left to do.

<img alt="Sep 21, 2025; Tampa, Florida, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers outside linebacker Lavonte David (54) tackles New York Jets running back Braelon Allen (0) during the second quarter at Raymond James Stadium. Effort, in the free agent era, is no longer solely dependent on the creation of a culture. But I do think that taking a “hot hand” approach at quarterback when Justin Fields is healthy would be truly damaging to the culture here and symptomatic of a bygone era of incompetence.

<img alt="Sep 21, 2025; Tampa, Florida, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles and New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn greet after the game at Raymond James Stadium. New York Jets (0-3)

Week 3 result: Lost to the Buccaneers 29-27Week 3 ranking: 25

Biggest issue on defense: Zero takeaways this season

The Jets are one of only three teams without a takeaway. (Miami and Washington are the others.) This is surprising, considering how much they pressure the quarterback. They lack playmakers in the secondary, as cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and Brandon Stephens aren’t ball hawks, with just five career interceptions in 119 combined games. The dearth of takeaways puts a lot of pressure on the offense, which could use the benefit of a short field on occasion.

This article originally appeared on Jets Wire: NFL power rankings: Where the Jets rank in polls heading into Week 4

The New York Jets are still winless ahead into Week 4 and power rankings reflect that.
