FRISCO \u2014 If Jadeveon Clowney<\/a> had it his way, Sunday against the Green Bay Packers wouldn\u2019t have been his first game of the season. He thought he could go last week against the Chicago Bears.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI was hoping,\u201d Clowney said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was looking forward to it. [Coaches] told me I had a chance. I got excited. And then he downed me. I said, \u2018God, I could\u2019ve helped,\u2019 but I\u2019ll get my chance this week.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cowboys could\u2019ve used help last week and this Sunday\u2019s game against the Green Bay Packers is no different. The Cowboys\u2019 defense is 27th in the NFL in points allowed. They\u2019re last in the NFL in third-down conversions allowed. They\u2019re coming off a game where they had no sacks, marking the first time in Bears quarterback Caleb Williams\u2019 career that he hasn\u2019t been sacked. Oh, he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week, too, for his four-touchdown performance.<\/p>\n

Just like last week, Clowney says he\u2019s ready to play \u2014 and to help. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very frustrating, but when the opportunity comes, just be ready,\u201d he said. \u201cI guess it just wasn\u2019t my time at that point in time. My time is coming. I just have to be ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer wouldn\u2019t put an exact timetable on Clowney\u2019s debut, but he did say he\u2019s \u201ctrending\u201d toward playing on Sunday against the Packers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is his second week, he\u2019s more comfortable with the things we\u2019re trying to do,\u201d Schottenheimer said. \u201cWe\u2019re working to get him active, but we\u2019ll see. <\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s see how today\u2019s practice goes. Let\u2019s see how this week at prep goes. Let\u2019s see how he is in the meetings, see how he\u2019s retaining the information, but the hope would be to get him out there, and if we can, we will. If we can, we won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schottenheimer already said Clowney was helping. After Sunday\u2019s loss, Clowney \u2014 now entering his 12th season<\/a> \u2014 had a message for his teammates. Clowney reiterated that message on Wednesday about his new team, which sits at 1-2.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a long season,\u201d he said. \u201cEverybody knows that. You can\u2019t win a Super Bowl in Week 3. Get rid of it, like having a bad play. Put it behind you, move forward and get ready for this week and work extremely hard through the week and let your preparation go out there and show on Sunday. That\u2019s what I think we\u2019re going to do. We had a better practice today. We\u2019re just looking forward to keep improving throughout the week. You can\u2019t win the game today. You can\u2019t win the game tomorrow. You can only win it on Sunday, but you can prepare like every day for it. I think that\u2019s going to make us a better team.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for his on-the-field contributions, Clowney said he has to knock off some rust, but he still feels like his speed and power \u2014 the same qualities that once made the 6-5 Clowney the No. 1 overall pick \u2014 are there. Clowney had 15 combined sacks the past two seasons. <\/p>\n

The Cowboys, with only three combined sacks through three games this season, could use a jolt in that area.<\/p>\n
