Former Arizona State standout Cam Skattebo knows his entry into the NFL with the New York Giants comes with a big reset button.<\/p>\n

Sure, the fourth-round pick<\/a> finished top five in Heisman Trophy voting and led his team to the College Football Playoff as a player who left high school with just one Division 1 offer. But in his own words, he hasn\u2019t proven anything at the next level yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many snaps in the NFL have you seen me play? Zero, right? I\u2019ve proved nothing,\u201d Skattebo told a reporter<\/a> who asked how he keeps a chip on his shoulder on Friday. \u201cI\u2019ve proved what I am in college, but I\u2019ve proved nothing at this level.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow where I\u2019m at, I have to prove myself, and if that\u2019s for five years or 10 years, I\u2019m gonna continue to prove myself. The best do it for the longest, so I\u2019m gonna continue to do that and just work my butt off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Can Cam Skattebo produce for Giants as a rookie?<\/p>\n

The opportunity is there for Skattebo to prove his usefulness early, as the Giants\u2019 running back room is headlined by second-year pro Tyrone Tracy Jr. and aging veteran Devin Singletary.<\/p>\n

Tracy rushed for 839 yards and five touchdowns on 192 carries as a rookie, while Singletary added 437 yards and four touchdowns on 113 carries. Tracy, boasting a 4.48-second 40-yard dash at the 2024 combine, provided more of the speed while Singletary brought the thump at 5-foot-7 and 203 pounds.<\/p>\n

Singletary is now at 1,001 career rushes after six seasons, and New York can get out of $12.75 million in cap hits over the next two years by electing to cut him after June 1 and owe just $6 million in dead money over the same timeframe.<\/p>\n

It gives the opportunity for Skattebo to take the torch from Singletary as the thumper of the Giants\u2019 backfield.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Tracy)\u00a0might be a little faster than me, so if you want to call it thunder and lightning, go ahead,\u201d Skattebo said. \u201cWhatever our roles are, you know, if he plays the whole time and I play not at all, I\u2019m just going to be here and I\u2019m going to work, put my head down and keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Detroit Lions made the split-back system work for them with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, the latter of whom Iowa State coach Matt Campbell compared Skattebo to<\/a>, combining for 2,187 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns in 2024.<\/p>\n

Skattebo dominated the Big 12 with his physicality, but many have questioned if it can translate to the NFL and if he can hold up long enough for it to matter.<\/p>\n

He thinks his approach to contact and the angles it takes is what sets him apart on that front.<\/p>\n

\u201cHead-up contact, that\u2019s real contact. Shoulder-to-shoulder isn\u2019t as much contact as people think,\u201d Skattebo said. \u201cAnd I have a good balance underneath my feet, so if I can get half of the body, you know, I feel like I\u2019m in a good shape to go past him.\u201d<\/p>\n

ASU fans know his versatility firsthand, as he became the first college player with at least 1,500 rushing yards (finished with 1,711) and 500 receiving yards (605) since Christian McCaffrey did it in 2016.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s in the passing game that he\u2019s able to most utilize his elusiveness, which he says defenders can underrate at their own peril.<\/p>\n

\u201c(If) people want to sleep (on it), they can sleep. I have no issue with that. It\u2019s been something I\u2019ve had to deal with my whole life, so I\u2019m going to continue to do what I need to do to be successful and play as long as I can in this league,\u201d Skattebo said.<\/p>\n
