The Los Angeles Rams have been consistent contenders across Sean McVay’s eight-year tenure as head coach, and the team is poised to be a threat to win the NFC West Division and make a deep playoff run yet again in 2025.<\/p>\n

That said, the team clearly already has an eye turned toward the future. There has been no better evidence of that during this offseason than the Rams’ willingness to let quarterback Matthew Stafford explore the market for a potential trade.<\/p>\n

Stafford, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions, will play next season at 37 years old, which will be his 17th campaign as a pro. He just signed an extension to remain in Los Angeles after finding his other options lacking and is currently playing on a two-year, $84 million<\/a> deal that keeps him under contract through 2026.<\/p>\n

However, some analysts believe the 2025 campaign will be the last of Stafford’s career.<\/p>\n

“Matthew Stafford is back for more, but there\u2019s a good chance he’ll decide to hang \u2018em up after this season,” Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report wrote<\/a> on Friday, May 9. “The Rams could also decide to move on from him if they don\u2019t see the value in an expensive, past-his-prime quarterback who has a 91.8 passer rating since the start of 2022.”<\/p>\n

Gagnon predicted that one way or the other, the Rams will probably be in the market for a new starting quarterback by next offseason — if not ahead of the trade deadline this fall.<\/p>\n

Jimmy Garoppolo, 33, and former Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett are currently the only two other QBs on the Rams’ depth chart, per ESPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n
