The end goal of offensive football is to score touchdowns, and Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs picked up 3 of those against the Dallas Cowboys, so we’re going to break them down.

On the day, Doubs had 6 receptions (on 8 targets) for 58 yards. He tied for second in Packers receiving yards with Matthew Golden (Josh Jacobs led the team with 71 receiving yards), but those three TDs are a nice boost in his overall day.

Touchdown 1: 2nd & goal, 10:06 remaining in the 1st quarter

The Packers are in 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR) in a 3×1 formation in the low red zone. Jordan Love [10] is in shotgun, with Josh Jacobs [8] aligned on his left.

They’ve got a tight split to the left, with Tucker Kraft [85] slightly off the line and Matthew Golden [0] and Dontayvion Wicks [13] in a loose stack outside. Romeo Doubs [87] is all alone on the right. The Cowboys have a lot of bodies at the line, which gives Doubs a true iso opportunity. All alone on an island on the outside.

The Packers are running a dual RPO (Run Pass Option). They’ve got an inside run called for Jacobs with a Bubble screen tag on the left, with Golden and Wicks blocking for Kraft. They also have Doubs tagged with a fade route.

This is a pre-snap read for Love. If the Packers have a numbers advantage to the Bubble, he’ll throw to Kraft. If he likes the one-on-one look on the right, he’ll throw to Doubs. If he doesn’t like either of those, he’ll hand the ball off.

The Packers don’t have numbers on the bubble, but he has a match-up he likes with Doubs, so he gets the snap and throws a ball up to the right.

Doubs goes up and makes a strong catch for his first touchdown.

Touchdown 2: 1st & goal, 10:39 remaining in the 2nd quarter

Once again, the Packers are in 11 personnel in the low red zone in a condensed, 3×1 look. This time it’s a tight look to the right, with Wicks on the end of the line with Kraft and Golden just outside of him. Once again, Doubs is split wide to the left. With the Cowboys up on the line, Doubs once again has a true iso look.

There’s no dual RPO this time: just a single RPO. Once again, it’s a pre-snap read. If Love likes the match-up with Doubs, he’ll throw the slant. If he doesn’t like it, he’ll give it to Jacobs inside.

With Doubs so wide and all the Cowboys tight to the line, it gives Love an easy pre-snap decision. He likes the match-up, so he throws.

Doubs gives a jab-step to the outside, then cuts quickly back to the inside.

Love has a nice throwaway from the body of Doubs. Doubs makes a nice grab, keeping the ball away from the swiping hands of the defender.

Touchdown 3: 3rd & 10, 1:49 remaining in the 4th quarter

No RPO this time, but the Packers are, once again, in 11 personnel in a 3×1 look. They’re in the high red zone this time, so they have to go a little further to hit paydirt.

On the right side, they’re running a Smash variant with Wicks on a short return route and Golden with a corner route over the top. Kraft is running a drag route to the middle of the field.

On the left, Doubs is running a skinny post, while Emanuel Wilson [23] is running a curl route from the backfield.

The Cowboys are showing a two-high look pre-snap, but they gradually shift to more of a single-high look before the ball is snapped. Love is reading the safety over Doubs post-snap. If he drops back, there’s no chance of him throwing to Doubs; he’ll likely work down to Wilson underneath.

At the snap, the safety over Doubs fires down on Wilson. That creates space behind him, which is exactly where Doubs is running. With that defender out of the mix – and Doubs with inside leverage on the outside defender – that makes Love’s read easy. Hit the top of the drop and layer a throw over the linebackers.

Really nice throw by Love as he’s fading slightly back in the pocket.

Albums listened to: Mazzy Star – So Tonight That I Might See

We’re not getting too fancy today.
