But even that was a bit misleading, as the Seahawks had some brutal red-zone issues throughout the year – including two disastrous possessions inside the 5-yard line in a loss to the Buffalo Bills and a fateful overtime red-zone sequence in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Meanwhile, as the New Orleans Saints’ offensive coordinator last season, Kubiak’s offense finished 11th in red-zone touchdown rate at 58.1%. And that came despite a slew of injuries that left Kubiak with less talent to work with than he’ll have in Seattle.

“He was able to get the New Orleans Saints to be No. 11, and this personnel I think is gonna be a lot better here,” Bumpus said. “… I think Kubiak and just the way that he dresses things up, the way that he layers things, the way that he’s gonna commit to the run, is going to allow for some multiple looks in the red zone.

“So the Hawks will be a top-10 red-zone scoring offense by the end of the year.”

In addition to bringing in Kubiak, there are other reasons to believe the Seahawks will be more efficient in the red zone this fall.

They upgraded their interior offensive line with first-round pick Grey Zabel. They added a pair of longtime NFL assistants in offensive line coach John Benton run game coordinator/senior offensive advisor Rick Dennison. They’re adding a fullback, with fifth-round pick Robbie Ouzts and Brady Russell as the leading candidates for the role.

And then there’s third-round rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe, whose tantalizing athleticism could make him a perfect fit for creative red-zone packages.

All those factors seem to fit nicely with Kubiak’s scheme.

“I look at the offense and how it can be multiple,” Bumpus said. “When you’re able to pack things in like that, then spread them out, layer the offense up, play-action boot, all that good stuff – that gives you more options in the red zone.”

Listen to the full Four Down Territory segment at this link or in the audio player at the bottom of this story.
