Everyone has a take on how the New Orleans Saints<\/a> should respond to Derek Carr’s sudden retirement, but the words coming from Drew Brees carry more weight than most. Brees spoke with WWL Radio this week<\/a> to discuss the goings-on with the Saints, Carr’s departure, and the selection of Tyler Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft. He advocated for signing a veteran quarterback to round out a room full of younger guys like Shough, Spencer Rattler, Jake Haener, and Hunter Dekkers.<\/p>\n

“I think that would be wise and I\u2019m sure that\u2019s being considered,” Brees mused. “I don\u2019t know if that answer is there now, or if it\u2019s something that I\u2019m sure as training camp goes along and as preseason goes along you begin to see some scenarios where all of a sudden there\u2019s a veteran guy that you could pluck.”<\/p>\n

Maybe that means someone available now, like Carson Wentz or Ryan Tannehill. It probably doesn’t mean Teddy Bridgewater who is hard at work reloading for another Florida state high school football championship<\/a>. But as Brees alluded to, other passers may become available later this summer. It’s just one example, but the Philadelphia Eagles<\/a> might make Tanner McKee (who Kellen Moore worked with last year) available after drafting Kyle McCord to back up Jalen Hurts.<\/p>\n

Brees pointed to his own experience as a young pro with veteran mentors like Doug Flutie and Mark Brunell helping him find his way. It’s an approach he’s seen work firsthand: “If I was kind of building the formula for a young quarterback to be successful, I think as you look at history, having a veteran guy who can help bring you along is vital.”<\/p>\n

At the same time, the Saints have a lot of former NFL quarterbacks on their coaching staff. Moore is the obvious one but Doug Nussmeier and Scott Linehan have been there before, too. At the same time, a coach isn’t the same thing as a fellow player. If the team feels a veteran quarterback could help them prepare one of the young guns to start in September, we should expect them to add one.<\/p>\n
