They had control of the AFC North for most of the early part of it. However, as things progressed, they watched their lead evaporate. Now, the Steelers are 6-5 after losing to the Chicago Bears. That allowed the Baltimore Ravens to overtake them for first place in the division.

That’s left Steelers fans upset, with many placing the blame on Mike Tomlin. James Harrison shares their frustration, even seeing a bleak future for the coaching staff if the Steelers continue losing.

“No, we are not firing Mike Tomlin, so give that up,” Harrison said Monday on his Deebo and Joe podcast. “The man has not had a losing season in the history of his head coaching career. There has not been a coach in history that has done that and been fired. Not even just fired, not been renewed. But it’s getting damn close to looking like we might be doing that. It’s gonna be some furniture moving in the offseason if we mess around and have a losing season. I guarantee you.

“It might be a whole new offensive and defensive staff. The only person that’s gonna be there is Mike Tomlin. I guarantee you that. That’s no question. They not gonna let him go. Grass ain’t always greener on the other side. But you mess around and have a losing season, they done seen what the grass look like. Somebody done opened the door so they can walk in there. Now, they may sit back and wait. It may not be a renewing of the contract.”

Harrison is likely correct that Tomlin isn’t getting fired after this season. The Rooney family has a lot of patience. Art Rooney II reaffirmed his trust in Tomlin earlier this year, too.

However, the rest of the coaching staff could be in danger, specifically defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. The Steelers invested a lot in their defense. They expected that unit to be among the league’s best. Unfortunately, it’s severely underperformed.

That could result in the Steelers parting ways with Austin once this season ends. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith seems to have more job security, but the season isn’t over yet. If the Steelers totally collapse and have a losing season, they might consider making wholesale changes, as Harrison suggests.

Also, Smith could be a candidate to fill one of the head coaching vacancies in the league. There are other scenarios that could force the Steelers to make changes along their coaching staff.

Tomlin’s job is the biggest, though. He’s signed with the team through the 2027 season. While it doesn’t look like he’s going to be fired, another season without a playoff win could cause ownership to lose some faith in Tomlin. If that drought lasts for the next two seasons, then Tomlin and the Steelers could be looking at a separation.

However, that’s still a while away. There’s no point speculating about decisions the Steelers will make after the 2027 season when the 2025 season isn’t over yet.

Yes, the team isn’t in a great spot. However, the Steelers still have a chance to win the AFC North. They still play the Ravens twice. While the team looks rough right now, it could turn things around. Tomlin has gotten players to step up when their backs have been against the wall before.

The next few weeks will be important for the Steelers. Some people’s future in Pittsburgh could be on the line. Like Harrison says, though, that likely doesn’t include Tomlin. For now, it’s his job until he doesn’t want it anymore.

The Pittsburgh Steelers started the 2025 season well.
