These victories were much needed for a team whose defense had been raising questions in recent weeks. The news that TJ Watt and Nick Herbig are likely to miss the Week 16 contest against the Detroit Lions is not ideal. However, Pittsburgh is expected to get their first-round pick from the 2025 NFL Draft back for this matchup, which is a major boost for the team.

Perry Knotts / Associated Press

The Pittsburgh Steelers select DL Derrick Harmon out of the University of Oregon with the 21st choice in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Derrick Harmon has missed five games this season due to knee injuries and has not played in the last three. His return comes at a crucial time as the Steelers prepare to face a Lions backfield led by Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Getting their star rookie back provides a much-needed lift for a defense that will need to step up against Detroit’s strong running attack.

Harmon spoke to Joe Rutter of Trib Live about being held out of the Week 15 Monday night game against the Miami Dolphins. He was candid and direct, admitting that he was frustrated with Head Coach Mike Tomlin’s decision, but also acknowledged that he understood why the team made the choice. His return adds both talent and depth to the Steelers’ defense as they look to build on their recent momentum.

“I was a little agitated, but I know Coach T is looking out for the best for the team and for me,” Harmon said while speaking about Tomlin’s choice to not dress him in Week 15.

Tomlin did come out and state that Harmon could have played against the Dolphins. The decision not to was made out of an abundance of caution, as the team clearly wants Harmon at full health for the final three games of the season and the playoff push. The Steelers’ defense has struggled at times throughout the 2025 season, but has started to look much more formidable. Even without Watt, Pittsburgh was able to slow down the Dolphins’ high-powered rushing attack.

Jordan Schofield / SteelerNation (X: @JSKO_PHOTO)

Steelers defensive lineman Derrick Harmon (99) during 2025 training camp in Latrobe, PA.

The challenge gets even greater against the Lions, whose offense is capable of striking quickly. Gibbs is arguably the most difficult running back in the league to slow down currently, making Harmon’s return all the more important. His presence gives the Steelers a better chance to contain one of the league’s top rushing threats and maintain their recent defensive momentum.

For Harmon, this Week 16 matchup is a return to his hometown, but his excitement isn’t just about that. He’s focused on simply being able to play again, contributing to the team, and helping Pittsburgh make a push for the playoffs.

“I’m more excited to get back on the field than going back home,” Harmon said Thursday afternoon. “Of course, it’s nice to go back home and play in front of family. I’ve played on that field from Little League to high school, so I know what it’s about. I want to get back on the field with my brothers.”

Steelers Rookie Derrick Harmon Set To Put On A Show In Detroit

For Harmon, the matchup is also a return to his hometown, and he’s excited about the possibility of friends and family being in attendance. That personal connection could give him an extra spark on the field.

Alysa Rubin / Pittsburgh Steelers

Steelers’ rookie Derrick Harmon during the 2025 NFL preseason.

He even joked that he stopped giving out tickets after realizing how much money was leaving his checking account. Harmon’s return brings talent, energy, and a personal boost to the Steelers as they push toward the playoffs.

With Harmon back in the lineup, can the Steelers’ defense finally take the next step and contain one of the league’s most dangerous rushing attacks?
