It\u2019s\u00a0been a season marred by adversity for the 49ers.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Despite many challenges that could have made the 2025 NFL season a wash, the 49ers have clinched a playoff berth and control their own destiny\u00a0with two games\u00a0remaining\u00a0in the regular season.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Star left tackle Trent Williams explained\u00a0how the team\u2019s resilience in the wake of devastating injuries helped forge a bond.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u00a0brought us closer together.\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0be lying to tell you that it\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0affect us,\u201d Williams explained to reporters after the 49ers\u2019 48-27 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Monday<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIt affected us, it affected everybody. Seeing your leader\u00a0[Fred Warner], the best linebacker on the ground.\u00a0Hearing another one of your leaders, Nick Bosa, one of the best\u00a0[defensive]\u00a0ends in the\u00a0league,\u00a0has torn his ACL.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0really hard\u00a0to take that and just say, \u2018Next man up.\u2019\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0be sitting here lying if I told you that was the case.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Williams\u2019 explanation\u00a0of\u00a0the team\u2019s emotions surrounding Warner and Bosa\u2019s season-ending injuries\u00a0is a much more candid response than what many team members told media\u00a0immediately\u00a0after they lost their two defensive leaders.\u00a0Obviously, the team\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0want to publicly dwell too much on the injuries as they happened\u00a0and instead put a focus on what the team can control on the field.\u00a0<\/p>\n As Williams says, executing the \u2018next-man-up\u2019 mentality is easier said than done. But the team has stayed the\u00a0course\u00a0with those next men indeed stepping up.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cGuys like [linebacker] Tatum [Bethune],\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0really happy\u00a0for him. So, the team just\u00a0kind of surrounded\u00a0him, coddled around him,\u201d Williams said. \u201cWe knew how important this opportunity was. We really wanted him to play\u00a0good,\u00a0I think he\u00a0seized his opportunity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Bethune, the second-year linebacker\u00a0with just one career start heading into the season, was the\u00a0immediate fill-in for Warner<\/a>\u00a0in the starting lineup.\u00a0He recorded at least 10 tackles in\u00a0his following four starts.\u00a0<\/p>\n Williams also noted the impact of defensive end\u00a0Clelin\u00a0Ferrell, who was signed to the practice squad in early November<\/a> and later signed to the active roster. Ferrell has four sacks in six games this season.\u00a0<\/p>\n The \u2018next-man-up\u2019 mentality originally felt like a stopgap measure to keep the team afloat. But as these lesser-known players have\u00a0stepped up\u00a0in place of the stars, the 49ers have done much more than simply\u00a0stay\u00a0alive.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIt all matters, and I think it all made us closer,\u201d Williams said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
