The Kansas City Chiefs had a clear focus on defense in this year’s NFL Draft.<\/p>\n
Of the seven players taken earlier this month in Green Bay, just two are on the offensive side of the ball. SMU running back Brashard Smith was selected in the seventh round and Utah State\u00a0wideout Jalen Royals was drafted with the No. 133 overall spot in the fourth round.<\/p>\n

Certainly, a weapon like quarterback Patrick Mahomes can never have too many weapons, but it’s already a crowded wide receivers room in Kansas City. That’s why it’s so curious that Bleacher Report’s Damian Parson labeled Royals<\/a> his Day 3 draft pick most likely to make an immediate impact.<\/p>\n “The Kansas City Chiefs continue to improve the wide receiver talent around quarterback Patrick Mahomes,” Parson wrote<\/a>. “This year, they took Utah State wideout Jalen Royals in the fourth round, a season after selecting Xavier Worthy in the first round and two years after drafting Rashee Rice. Chiefs director of player personnel Ryne Nutt told reporters he believes Royals offers a similar skill set to Rice’s, saying, ‘His game is very similar to Rashee’s.’ Rice is an alignment-versatile receiver whom Andy Reid utilizes to create mismatches against the defense.”<\/p>\n “The 6-0, 195-pound Royals’ height and weight are close to the 6-1 Rice’s, but he is a better raw athlete, per their respective athletic testing numbers.”<\/p>\n Mahomes already has Worthy, Rice, Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster at his disposal, so it’s hard to imagine Royals getting much playing time his rookie season unless it’s on special teams, where he might get a chance to return kicks.<\/p>\n Related: Will Chiefs Break Their Own Unwritten Rule?<\/a><\/p>\n
