Jaguars wide receiver Parker Washington has emerged as the team’s leading receiver this season.The third-year player has posted back-to-back 100-yard receiving games.Washington leads the Jaguars with 53 receptions for 760 yards and is second on the team in receiving touchdowns.<\/p>\n
Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a> wide receiver Parker Washington<\/a> gave a preview of coming attractions in training camp, when he was clearly the best wide receiver on the field day on a daily basis, in a position room that included the team’s last two first-round draft picks, Brian Thomas Jr.<\/a>, and Travis Hunter<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n Thomas was coming\u00a0off\u00a0a 1,000-yard rookie season. Hunter won the Heisman Trophy in 2024 and caught 96 passes for 1,258 and 15 touchdowns with Colorado.\u00a0<\/p>\n Washington stuck to a game plan he set for himself<\/a> during the offseason and with Thomas and Hunter both plagued by injuries and Thomas by drops early in the season,\u00a0it’s\u00a0Washington who is leading the team in\u00a0nearly every\u00a0receiving category.\u00a0<\/p>\n “I focused on my preparation of just being ready for an opportunity,” Washington said Dec. 29 during a Zoom news conference with the media. “I didn’t know what was in store this season. I was just putting the work in … just ready to put my best foot forward, regardless of the situation.”\u00a0<\/p>\n Washington has back-to-back 100-yard games\u00a0<\/p>\n Washington has a history of exceeding expectations in the NFL.\u00a0<\/p>\n The third-year player from Penn State was a sixth-round draft pick<\/a> in 2023 and\u00a0slotted as a kick returner when he was a rookie. When he did get on the field, he was typecast as a slot receiver.\u00a0<\/p>\n However, he continues to elevate his game and his role during the\u00a0Jaguars’\u00a0push to the postseason.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Washington posted his second consecutive 100-yard game and third in his career on Dec. 28 when he caught eight passes for\u00a0115 yards\u00a0in the Jaguars’ 23-17 victory<\/a> over Indianapolis, at Lucas Oil Stadium.\u00a0<\/p>\n He had six receptions for\u00a0145 yards\u00a0the previous week against Denver and\u00a0leads\u00a0the Jaguars with 53 receptions for\u00a0760 yards\u00a0and a 14.3 average.\u00a0Washington\u2019s\u00a0four receiving touchdowns are second to running back Travis Etienne<\/a> with six.\u00a0<\/p>\n Washington\u2019s size\u00a0hasn\u2019t\u00a0mattered\u00a0<\/p>\n Washington is the smallest wide receiver on the active roster at 5 feet 10 inches and 204 pounds. His speed has never been an\u00a0issue\u00a0and\u00a0he’s\u00a0certainly playing bigger.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Jaguars can line\u00a0up Washington anywhere on the field, against any cornerback, and know he will get open, compete for the\u00a0ball\u00a0and then make yards after the catch \u2015 such as his 63-yard gain against the Broncos after catching a short pass from Trevor Lawrence<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n Washington has nine of the team’s 20 longest plays in the past two games.\u00a0<\/p>\n Washington said getting yards after the catch is “a mindset thing.”\u00a0<\/p>\n “First off, make the catch,” he said. “But different catches, against different coverages … [there are] ways that I’m thinking I can get more [YAC].\u00a0It’s\u00a0all instincts so I feel like the\u00a0more and more\u00a0I like\u00a0practice\u00a0it and study it and see other great receivers that do it well and how they do it, I just kind of use that. And then once you get in the game,\u00a0it’s\u00a0just whatever instinct kicks in.”\u00a0<\/p>\n Washington has also proven durable, can take shots over the middle and is a willing blocker. He remains a lethal threat as a punt returner<\/a>, and has two for touchdowns this season and three in the last two years.
