Aaron Glenn touts Jets’ top 3 improvements

Is there any positive outlook for the New York Jets and their abysmal 3-13 record? According to head coach Aaron Glenn, there is.

Speaking to reporters before practice on Wednesday, the first-time head coach broke down everything he has liked from the team this year. His outlook on the organization stood in stark contrast to that of the fan base and the media.

To outsiders, the team’s blowout losses by more than 20 points in each of their last four games, combined with their league-worst rankings in several metrics, overshadow any positive developments from the club in 2025.

Glenn understands that much.

“I know there’s some things that we have to clean up, and as we go forward those are some things that we’re looking at, and that’s defense, and really our passing game on offense,” Glenn said.

But the coach made clear that not everything was a disaster this season. He believes there are plenty of positives to build off of going into the offseason.

Glenn focuses on positives in lost year

Glenn knows that there is a lot of things the team has to improve going into 2026.

It’s not necessarily the worst thing in the world to highlight the positives, though. In the case of a young Jets roster, New York’s coach highlighted the team’s running success, special teams, and declining penalty totals as reasons to feel optimistic moving forward.

All of these points are fair, but they also highlight that there aren’t many things to celebrate.

At the very least, let’s see how much the group has improved in each area.

Running the ball

For the first time in almost a decade, the Jets have a 1,000-yard runner. Breece Hall, who ran behind one of the better offensive lines in the game, topped the total for the first time in his career.

After years of dismal showings on the ground, Glenn was happy to see the team improve in that key area.

“In ’24, I think we were last in the league as far as running the ball, I think in ’23 we were in the bottom 10, and we got ourselves to where we were somewhere in the top seven for right now,” Glenn said. “That was a huge emphasis, and I’m proud of the way our guys went about that.”

New York ranks seventh-best in the league with 126.7 rushing yards per game.

The Jets’ rushing attack was expected to be one of the best in the league when the team signed Justin Fields to a free agent contract this offseason. Fields, a scrambling quarterback, has always helped offenses on the ground.

Even with Fields’ benching midway through the year, though, New York has been able to stay consistent in that side of the game.

The passing game, though? That’s another story.

Penalties

Another area of improvement highlighted by Glenn is penalties. Despite struggling earlier in the year with undisciplined play, the Jets have managed to improve in that area.

Are they the best in the league in that mark? Nope. However, improvement is encouraging in that regard.

“We were dead last in the league when it came to penalties for two years straight, and this year, I think we’re somewhere between 17, so that’s a huge improvement for our guys,” he said.

The Jets are tied for 18th in fewest penalties with 106. In 2024, they were 31st with 137.

Some of that improvement can be attributed to the fact that New York’s offensive line has enjoyed continuity throughout the entire season, which has helped decrease penalties compared to recent years.

Of course, part of it could also be that referees aren’t inclined to throw the flag frequently in 30-point blowouts.

Special teams

Here’s the one group that has truly made a tremendous impact for the Jets. Not a single part of New York’s special teams has faltered throughout the year.

Austin McNamara quickly became one of the best punters in the game, Nick Folk was as consistent as ever, and the return specialists in Isaiah Williams and Kene Nwangwu were the best in football.

One special teams touchdown would represent a good season for a group; the Jets had four.

“We’ve become one of the elite special teams units across the league,” Glenn said. “And not just that, even on some of the small detail things that people really don’t look at, and that’s on our field goal block, the field goal team. Last year we had three blocks, and our field goal this year, we had no blocks and we’re at about 98% as far as field goals.”

Is this a laughable trio of highlights for a team’s season? Perhaps. But it at least shows that Glenn has facilitated progress in some ways, and that the coach is keeping an optimistic outlook on the team’s trajectory.

In 2026, though, the Jets must strive for more than just a solid run game, modest penalty totals, and a great special teams unit.

Is there any positive outlook for the New York Jets and their abysmal 3-13 record?
