MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The college football schedule on New Year’s Day gets started with the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Orange Bowl, which features two of the most explosive and well-balanced teams in the country with No. 4 Texas Tech and No. 5 Oregon. It’s a meeting of two teams who rank inside the top 11 nationally in scoring offense, scoring defense, total offense and total defense — so, with very few weak spots to exploit, it will likely require elite play-making on a big stage to keep the pursuit of a national championship going for either team.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Texas Tech earned a bye in the 12-team bracket and its spot in the Orange Bowl with a top-four ranking at the end of the season after going 12-1 and winning the Big 12. This will be the program’s first-ever College Football Playoff game and among the biggest games in school history after completing the winningest season in school history. The Red Raiders won 12 games by 20-plus points, only losing by one score to Arizona State in a game that was notable for the absence of starting quarterback Behren Morton, who was injured the week prior in a win against Kansas.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Oregon, on the other hand, is in the College Football Playoff for the third time in school history and is currently carrying a 2-2 record in CFP games after beating James Madison 51-34 in the first round. The Ducks are looking to advance to the semifinals for the first time since finishing as the the national runner-up in 2014 and avenge the earlier-than-expected exit from last year’s bracket when they were one-and-done in the CFP as the No. 1 team in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The winner will advance to the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Peach Bowl to play the winner of the Rose Bowl between No. 1 Indiana and No. 9 Alabama.\u00a0<\/p>\n
