{"id":647675,"date":"2026-01-02T08:49:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-02T08:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/647675\/"},"modified":"2026-01-02T08:49:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-02T08:49:19","slug":"cbs-cut-away-from-gary-danielsons-retirement-goodbye-after-20-years-at-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/647675\/","title":{"rendered":"CBS cut away from Gary Danielson&#8217;s retirement goodbye after 20 years at network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gary Danielson\u2019s 20-year run at CBS \u2014 and his 36-year one as a legendary college football announcer \u2014 ended with a bit of a hiccup.<\/p>\n<p>The network cut off an emotional goodbye at the end of his final broadcast <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/26\/sports\/gary-danielson-retiring-as-cbss-lead-college-football-voice\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">before retirement<\/a> following the Sun Bowl between Duke and Arizona State on Wednesday, with Danielson\u2019s final comments \u2014 alongside play-by-play broadcaster Brad Nessler, sideline reporter Jenny Dell and members of their production staff \u2014 getting interrupted by a CBS advertisement.<\/p>\n<p>In the right corner of the frame, a hand counted down the final seconds of air time for the tribute, and Danielson, the six-time Emmy nominee, turned toward his producer and said, \u201cSometimes you can say, how do you get off? This guy right here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And moments later they were indeed, ironically, off the air.<\/p>\n<p>It provided a sour ending to what otherwise was a wholesome tribute for the former undrafted quarterback who embarked on an 11-year NFL career \u2014 with the Lions and Browns \u2014 before shifting into broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p>Danielson, Nessler and Dell reflected on photos and memories through his broadcasting career, including some with iconic CBS voice Verne Lundquist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody says, \u2018What do you want to be remembered as?\u2019 That\u2019s cool, but it\u2019s what I want to remember. Screengrab via X\/@awfulannouncing<\/p>\n<p>Then, the camera zoomed out to reveal other members of the production crew next to the trio, and the broadcast cut to the truck and camera people inside the El Paso stadium as Danielson acknowledged their role in his career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have done it with somebody that is unmatched in what you do has been a privilege,\u201d Nessler said. \u201cIt\u2019s been an honor. I\u2019m going to miss you. Our team\u2019s going to miss you. Our crew\u2019s going to miss you. CBS is going to miss you.
