{"id":649412,"date":"2026-01-03T00:47:36","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T00:47:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/649412\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T00:47:36","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T00:47:36","slug":"somethings-got-to-change-for-bengals-to-compete-for-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/649412\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Something\u2019s got to change\u2019 for Bengals to compete for championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"1\">Burrow said he remains focused on having a good performance and putting his team in the best position possible to secure a win, but it\u2019s tough to square that with what happened in the nine games he missed due to his Week 2 turf toe injury.<\/p>\n<p>Explore<a class=\"headline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/sports\/bengals-stewarts-first-sack-meant-the-world-to-me\/DIHWJIO3WRCAZOPQXELO44NNYM\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bengals: Stewart\u2019s first sack \u2018meant the world to me\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"3\">\u201cI feel confident every time I step foot on the field that, you know, we have a great chance to win, and, you know, really this year, I\u2019ve played however many games and we\u2019ve won more than we\u2019ve lost, and I feel good about that,\u201d Burrow said. \u201cAll I can do is go out and when I\u2019m out on the field, try to play well, try to win and go from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"4\">Burrow played his best season in 2024, coming off 2023 wrist surgery to lead the league in passing yards, touchdowns, completions and pass attempts, only to fall short of his team goals with a 9-8 record. The Bengals overhauled the defensive staff, the linebacking corps and made a few tweaks up front but didn\u2019t start seeing the fruits of those changes until after the bye week when they were sitting at 3-6 and still lost two more games before Burrow\u2019s return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"5\">Since then, Cincinnati is 3-2 but 5-2 overall when Burrow started this season. Burrow still believes he can win a lot of games with the Bengals, but \u201csomething\u2019s got to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"9\">\u201cWe want to be competing for championships every year,\u201d Burrow said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to be in the spot we are in now, so something\u2019s got to change, whether it\u2019s players we have continuing to improve and get better and play championship caliber football, or bringing in guys that will or whatever it may be. Obviously, something has to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"10\">Burrow has expressed his belief in the coaching staff but has not shared any ideas as to what changes should be made. He was vocal last year about needing his best weapons back, and the Bengals gave extensions and new contracts to wide receivers Ja\u2019Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, as well as tight end Mike Gesicki. <\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"11\">Cincinnati never was able to reach an agreement on an extension for defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who ended up playing seven games before a hip and pelvis injury shut him down before the bye.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"12\">Asked if he will have conversations with the higher-ups about changes he would like to see made this offseason, Burrow said \u201cwe\u2019ll see\u201d and re-iterated that he has \u201cgreat communication\u201d with the coaches, director of player personnel Duke Tobin and the front office.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/HTNF5VKEGRFZHL4GZNY7ESINYA.jpg\" alt=\"Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow speaks during an interview after an NFL football game against the Arizona Cardinals, Sunday, Dec. 28, 2025, in Cincinnati. (AP Photo\/Jeff Dean)\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" width=\"1600\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-credit-text\">Credit: AP<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/sports\/bengals\/GKHWGYQCPFCHHI45BJDBY6CQ4Y\/[object Object]\" class=\"image-expand\" alt=\"icon to expand image\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-credit-text\">Credit: AP<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"16\">\u201cI think my job is to No. 1, play as well as I can, No. 2, continue to improve, and No. 3, be the conduit between coaching staff, front office and the locker room,\u201d Burrow said. \u201cRelay feelings that players have, relay sentiments in the locker room because coaches and front office, they aren\u2019t down there every day and they don\u2019t understand a lot of the things that go on in the locker room, so I think as quarterback, your job is to relay some of those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"17\">Burrow said he\u2019s been having fun the last two games and made clear he had fun last year, too, even though it\u2019s been frustrating at times. That\u2019s \u201clife of playing sports.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"18\">In his sixth year, he\u2019s learned to just focus on the things he can control.
