{"id":649641,"date":"2026-01-03T02:55:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T02:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/649641\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T02:55:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T02:55:12","slug":"isaiah-williams-caps-his-jets-roller-coaster-with-unlikely-team-mvp-nod","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/649641\/","title":{"rendered":"Isaiah Williams caps his Jets roller coaster with unlikely team MVP nod"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even 3-13 teams produce inspirational performances.<\/p>\n<p>The Jets are no different. <\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the players voted for Isaiah Williams to be the \u201cCurtis Martin Team MVP\u2019, perhaps the most unlikely recipient of all to be honored in team history.<\/p>\n<p>The 24-year-old kicker returner and receiver, of course, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/04\/sports\/jets-cut-returner-isaiah-williams-after-brutal-gaffes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was released by the Jets<\/a> after a poor performance against the Dolphins in Week 4, fumbling a kickoff and fair-catching a punt at the 3-yard line.<\/p>\n<p>Williams was re-signed after being cut and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/10\/sports\/isaiah-williams-has-been-valuable-spark-plug-for-jets\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">finished with two punt returns for TDs<\/a>, averaging 14.1 per return, and he returned 23 kickoffs for an average of 30.2 yards per return.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.29129887;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38082556\" width=\"762\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/18-new-york-jets-scores-115123908.jpg\" alt=\"New York Jets player Isaiah Williams #18 scores a touchdown against the Cleveland Browns.\" class=\"wp-image-38082556\"  \/>Isaiah Williams celebrates after returning a punt for a touchdown during the Jets\u2019 Nov. 9 game. Robert Sabo for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that was really special because I think from the outside, even from the inside, I don\u2019t think anybody thought that he would be voted MVP,\u2019\u2019 Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said. \u201cHe was [written] off and, man, for him to go about his business and not be swayed by all the negative talk, I thought it was outstanding and now for him to be the MVP of this team, that is just a story in itself and I\u2019m very, very proud of him.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Williams\u2019 tale has been storybook \u2014 undrafted, signed off the Bengals practice squad after the season began, cut, re-signed and returning two punts for a TD \u2014 the second of which came in the second meeting with Miami.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you would have told me I would be Team MVP by the end of the season, I would have probably looked at you crazy,\u2019\u2019 Williams said. \u201cAfter I got cut, I thought I was going to be on a practice squad for the rest of the year, just working, getting better. Bill Kostroun for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Jets special teams coach Chris Banjo called Williams\u2019 season and receiving the award \u201ctremendous,\u201d\u00a0 adding, \u201cTo see the way he started the year and what he\u2019s been able to do since, his commitment to who he is as a person but also his growth and development as a player, has been really cool to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DT Harrison Phillips was awarded the \u201cDennis Byrd Most Inspirational\u2019\u2019 award. <\/p>\n<p>Phillips was also the recipient of the Gerald Eskenazi Media Good Guy Award for most cooperative player, named after the long-time Jets beat writer for the New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Tippmann, who moved from center to guard this season, was named the \u201cKyle Clifton Good Guy Award.\u2019\u2019 <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Olu Fashanu was named the \u201cEd Block Courage\u2019\u2019 award recipient, starting all 17 games at left tackle.<\/p>\n<p>LB Marcelino McCrary-Ball was given the \u201cMarty Lyons Community Service\u2019\u2019 award for his generosity in the community. <\/p>\n<p>And rookie CB Azareye\u2019h Thomas was given the \u201cBill Hampton\u2019\u2019 award as the rookie who acts most like a pro.<\/p>\n<p>Running back Breece Hall, who was limited in practice again on Friday, is not among the players who are ruled out for the game due to injury, but don\u2019t expect him to be in uniform Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Hall, who has been battling knee soreness, eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing last week and is in the final year of his contract. Call it a business decision.<\/p>\n<p>Among the players ruled out are TE Mason Taylor, RB Isaiah Davis, DL Michael Clemons, CB Qwan\u2019tez Stiggers, TE Jelani Woods and OL Xavier Newman.<\/p>\n<p>Jets kicker Nick Folk, who somehow was robbed of being named to the Pro Bowl after making 28-of-29 field goals (96.6 percent) and all 22 of his PATs, told The Post on Friday he \u201cwants to keep playing\u2019\u2019 in 2026, but still wants to talk it over with his wife and kids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Folk, who\u2019s 41 and in his 18th season, is a free agent after this season. <\/p>\n<p>He has twin 12-year-old sons who are accomplished soccer players in the youth system of MLS team Dallas FC, and logistics regarding managing their budding careers and schedule will be a topic of conversation with his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet the insider\u2019s view on Gang Green\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Jets by Brian Costello, a weekly Sports+ exclusive.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>He said he has not spoken to the team about returning, but plans to do so on Monday, the day after the season.<\/p>\n<p>Remarkably, the Jets starting offensive line will line up together for the 17th consecutive game this season on Sunday, which is a rarity.<\/p>\n<p>Fashanu (992 snaps), LG John Simpson (968), C Josh Myers (1,000), Tippmann (999) and RT Armand Membou (999) have played in 4,958 of the 5,000 total offensive snaps, 99.2 percent of the available snaps. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the first time the Jets have started the same OL all season since 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t see that too often, to where you have five guys have that continuity game after game, improving, getting better week after week and not one of them go down,\u201d Glenn said. \u201cThat\u2019s a credit to those guys taking care of their bodies and understanding what they need to go out and compete every week.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Even 3-13 teams produce inspirational performances.
