We\u2019re getting news already about the Atlanta Falcons lining up interviews for their head coaching vacancy, and Raheem Morris was fired less than 24 hours ago. As I said earlier today, I expect this team to move quickly, and they are doing just that.<\/p>\n
Per NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Falcons have requested an interview with Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver for their vacancy. If they land him, Weaver would be their second straight defensive-minded head coach and fourth in their last five hires.<\/p>\n
Weaver is considered an up-and-coming coach who went from a solid career as a defensive lineman in the NFL to defensive line coach and defensive coordinator jobs in the NFL; he\u2019s also held the title of assistant head coach with the Baltimore Ravens.<\/p>\n
While Miami\u2019s defense has not been great in 2025-they rank in the 20s for points and yards allowed\u2014part of that has been the collapse of a putrid offense and August additions failing to gel that have put more pressure on the unit; Weaver had this group in the top ten for points and yardage allowed in 2024. He\u2019s considered a scheme-adaptable, player-friendly defensive coach who can also be extremely blunt about the state of his defenses when they struggle, which fans would no doubt welcome.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s little doubt that he\u2019s going to get his shot as a head coach at some point\u2014the Saints were among the teams that interviewed him a year ago, and Miami\u2019s struggles have not dimmed his star\u2014and would presumably be hired if the Falcons like his vision for the defense and leadership. His willingness to tailor a scheme to his players instead of jamming square pegs into round holes and comfort calling defensive plays would help Atlanta avoid the fiasco that was Jimmy Lake\u2019s defense in 2024, one would hope.<\/p>\n
Given that the offense is an urgent priority after it a forgettable season and that some of the strongest names on the market are offensive-minded options, I don\u2019t expect Weaver to end up landing the job, but he\u2019s a good candidate I hope the Falcons will give a fair shake to.
